research for school design project (major edit)

Recommended Posts

JUSS10

hopefully i can post this in here,

so if any of you have been following the calender thread you may know that i am going to school for industrial design. so i was wondering if i could get some help on one of my current projects. One of my classes is working with whirlpool to redesign the refrigerator.

here is what I'm asking for. it will only take a minute or two. i have three questions and you can answer them with just a few words each if you wish.

1. what do you like about your current refrigerator?

2. what do you dislike about your current refrigerator?

3. is there anything you wish your fridge had/could do?

and if there are any other thoughts on the subject feel free to jot them down.

this should only take a minute or and two but could help me greatly in the research aspect of my project.

Thanks!

Justin, For you pal! I'am in!!!!

Just so you know, my fridge is NOT state of the art!

No dvd player, computer screen, and it wouln't answer the phone or front door!!

1, My current fridge works... I like that! But the stuff in the back gets colder than the stuff in the front, and can freeze sometimes!

2, I hate them wire shelves, no light in the freezer, and the door wouln't shut if I have a 30 pac in there because the door shelves are too wide!

3, It's simple a fridge is a fridge! that's all it should be!!!!

No computers, dvd players, or personal assistant needed!!! Got that?

I like the LED lite thing.... but not at an extra cost! I can redneck tech that in later!

How 'bout a spiny thingy (laisy susuan) shelf that would be to... easy ! I like it!

If ya' wanna' go hi-tech how 'bout a lazer scan date code so I know when to pitch out the moldy stuff or eat it?

Ohh... and a push botton beer server if ya' can!!

Thanks, Justin!!! Hope this helps!!!

:) HORSEFEATHERS!

This may be a dumb idea but I feel it is difficult to clean the heat transfer coils or whatever they are. They are under the fridge in my case. We have some fur in the house (dogs) and I try to clean those coils every so often but it is tough to get to the back area. Maybe a hook up for a vacuum to clean these automatically or make it easier to perform some kind of maintenance to these parts.

Like the ice maker and dispenser and glass shelves in the fridge.

Rather have wire baskets in the freezer.

Ours is side by side but I like the newer fridge on top / freezer on bottom models better.

1. what do you like about your current refrigerator?

2. what do you dislike about your current refrigerator?

3. is there anything you wish your fridge had/could do?

Current refrigerator is a side-by-side Kenmore, made by G.E. It's about 10 years old.

1. It keeps stuff cold

2. Too numerous to mention, but here is a short list:

Too difficult to clean the coils

Not wide enough for a large pizza

Too much breakable plastic

Water in door is too slow.

Ice maker has been replaced 5 times.

3. Easily accessible coils (for cleaning)

Slides for drawers that won't break

Quick beer/wine chiller

Audible warning that sounds after 30 seconds if a door is not closed tightly

My wife is not at home at the moment, so I will amend this after I ask her, since she is the queen of the kitchen.

1. what do you like about your current refrigerator?

The size, side by side w/bottom freezer

2. what do you dislike about your current refrigerator?

A refrigerator is one of the largest loads on your elect bill.

also in the summer time it's pumping heat into the house

as your trying to cool it with the A.C.

3. is there anything you wish your fridge had/could do?

I see many refrigerators backed up to outside walls,

what if you had a tube to the outdoors, with a air filter

and a baffle system. So in winter time it would take in

filtered cold air, not needing the compressor, and in the

summer time it would exhaust the heat outside.

I have a side by side...relatively new. The fridge is great and works like it is supposed to. But like some of the above comments; the coils are hard to clean, the ice machines do not last long, and the cheap plastic that holds the shelves. I have had to jury rig a few of them. Love the glass shelves and the 2 baskets in the bottom of the fridge for veggies and cold cuts and cheeses.

I also have an older fridge in the basement...next to the man-cave that has done more then it's duty...thinking I should paint it :) Red. Works great and none of the above problems. I do have to defrost it once a year in the winter, A small price to pay to keep the man-cave stocked.

I kinda like the idea of a vent outside. I also like the freezer on bottom idea and even a light in frezzer. and maybe a buzzer or alarm if door is left open. sometimes you think door is shut but not fully. hope this helps you some

1. what do you like about your current refrigerator?

It does the job with little drama. The door pockets are big enough to hold a gallon of milk or similar size container.

2. what do you dislike about your current refrigerator?

The door seal has fallen apart near the bottom. I really should fix it! Plastic trim on the shelves has also loosened and falls off.

3. is there anything you wish your fridge had/could do?

I CAN'T PRINT THAT HERE - THIS IS A FAMILY BOARD.

Just kidding. It pretty much does what I need.

1. what do you like about your current refrigerator?

Not much. Regular typical style top-mount. 17 cu.ft. I think. Move-able shelves with raised lips to catch spills are pretty nice. Lighted freezer is nice.

2. what do you dislike about your current refrigerator?

Same move-able shelves... not easy to move. Can be a good thing or a bad thing. Shelf brackets (not the standards in the back) get in the way of things like pop/beer cases and large pizza boxes.

Lights in fridge portion are top center and are plain old appliance bulbs. Hard/annoying to reach for replacement and are obstructive to any large items sitting on top shelf. In other words, center of top shelf from front to back is pretty much useless space.

Plastic door shelf keepers (you know... the part that keeps stuff from falling out when you open the door are easily removable for cleaning... too easy... they flex with the weight of things sliding against it when the door opens and items end up on the floor.

3. is there anything you wish your fridge had/could do?

Would be nice to be able to have decent weight bearing shelves that don't need such tall braces taking up space under the shelf edges down the center standard.

LED light bars recessed across horizontally in the top and vertically in the sides. Would add light to lower shelves that currently is blocked by items on upper shelves. Maybe even something incorporated into the underside of each shelf... that would really help at the back/bottom shelf.

Tip baskets with a spring tension lock or something like that for the door shelves. Or make the door shelves out of something other than flimsy plastic so they don't flex and fall out. (this could just be a problem for my cheap model though too.)

I also like the alarm or beeper idea for an unsealed fridge door. I like the 2 min timer idea... and it should have a quick and easy over-ride switch than can be flipped for times like cleaning or putting away/re-organizing the groceries. Switch should also reset itself upon door close.

I would like A refrigerator with a T.V. inside,

so when my kid is standing there with the

door open she'll have something to do!

:)
