ff1110 0 #1 Posted October 5, 2010 I got my 1973 8hp 4spd missing the carb and air cleaner. I have been unable to find used ones, will a carb from a 10 hp work? I can't afford to buy new right now.
Don1977 604 #2 Posted October 5, 2010 I'm not sure but I don't think a 10 HP carb will work. I think you need a carb form an 8 HP or smaller engine. Some one that knows for sure should post an answer soon.
ol550 830 #3 Posted October 5, 2010 A carb from a 4 hp will fit but I don't think you will get enough air for maximun HP. the 7 and 8 hp ones will work out much better. Same as it is hard to dial in a larger HP carb on a 4hp. The 10 and up have a wider bolt patern. Mike

MikesRJ 552 #5 Posted October 7, 2010 The correct engine for both models of the 1973 8hp 4-speed (1-0276 and 1-0277) was the Tecumseh V80. You have a Kohler installed. Which Kohler engine is it exactly? I assume it is the K181 which means any carburetor from another k91 to K181 would work. Look for one with a number "30" or "32" (meaning 30 or 32mm opening) in a circle on the top inside of the air intake throat of the carburetor. The original Kohler part number is B-231739, Kohler Carburetor - Part No. 41 853 08-S Part No. 41 853 08-S AKA 4185308S Supersedes Part No. B-231739 & 41 853

Mike... you're leaving something out.... he'd look awfully funny trying to put a vertical shaft teccy in there! There are also 1973 8hp 4-speed models that have horizontal shaft engines. MikesRJ 552 #8 Posted October 7, 2010 Jason, Ah yes, of course you are right. I see now that the 1-0120 was equipped with a K181. I missed that the first time around. Thanks for catching it.
