K301 Stator Question

Recommended Posts

dobeleo

I have a 1986 312-A. It has a Kohler K301 12 HPEngine. I need to fire up the engine before the wife will let me buy tires an other parts I need. I'm having a brain cramp. Where do the Black and Yellow wire from the stator go? Just trying to wire it up real quick so I can fire the old girl up.

Thanks all for your help!

Dan

Dan they go to the voltage regulator.

As a note they do not have to be hooked up to run, just be sure they are not touching anything, I bet she would never know :)

A 1986 312 does not have a rectifier/regulator. (unless someone changed it)

If there's still only two wires coming out of the engine, the yellow one is for headlight power (only has lights when engine is running) and the black wire (with the diode) goes to the "R" terminal on the ignition switch. (battery charging wire)

I believe the third wire in the plug goes to the "+" post on the ignition coil.

That makes sense! I dont have a rectifier as noted above, my ignition switch is rusted solid (like everything else was when I started). Need to pick one up.

The following is the my link from Photo Bucket, made alot of progress since these pics were taken, will download more this week.

Thanks again all for your help

Now I am going to try to start without an ignition switch, just a battery and jumper cables. So I am thinking I will need to do the following:

Battery (-) jumper cable to frame

Battery (+) wire to (+) side of coil

Battery (+) jumper cable to starter, hopefully the old girl will start!

I know the starter works, I cleaned the points and timed as instructed here.

That should do it right?

Thanks again all!

P.S. The engine only had 300 hours on it before my brother screwed it up, The piston was starting to slap a little so I honed, replaced the piston and rings, and lapped the valves.
