whfan74 2,071 #1 Posted September 29, 2010 We decided that this summer was the time to put up the deck we had wanted off the back of our house. We plan on staying in this home for quite some time so we really wanted to do it right. I still have a couple of trim pieces to install but it is pretty much finished. The bottom deck is 12x18 and the upper deck is 12x14. We have given our self the much needed space for entertaining while also allowing our kids an area to play. No more stressful weekends of staining this deck. All deck boards, trim pieces, railings, pergola are composite decking. The yard became neglected this summer but that will change for next year. Next year the landscaping will be installed around it to help tie everything together. A big thanks goes to dad for his time and the use of his tools. Here it is.......... Side shot heading up to the lower section.... Yard view of the lower section.... Angled view of the upper portion.....

bk-scouter 93 #8 Posted September 30, 2010 Looks really nice. Extra special when you get to work on it with your dad too. I'm trying to finish mine up right now that I started LAST summer Good thing I don't make a living in carpentry... The yard can always wait. -BK
Gerry w 2 #9 Posted September 30, 2010 I can almost see Stevasaurus falling down the stairs now ... That's funny right there!! Scott, is that STILL your house in the last pic, or next door in the distance?? Deck looks great, your going to love the no stain/rot aspect of it!
whfan74 2,071 #10 Posted October 1, 2010 Thanks so much you guys! We are really enjoying it! Thankfully Steve will be safe as this is at my place and the M&G will be at my parents place! Gerry.......that is the neighbor's place. We live in a subdivision and the houses aren't too awfully far apart. You also hit the nail on the head.........no more staining or rot. Projects next summer: Lattice work around the bottom to help keep the critters out, landscape the ground area around the deck, and install outdoor speakers mounted to the house. I will also be buying the rest of my light filtering material that is going to be mounted on the pergola. Our house faces directly to the west with no shade.........it get's pretty toasty out there in the summer. The composite is hopefully going to pay for itself in the long run. We also have solar powered lights on the corner posts of the upper deck. And if you look real close on these tiny pictures you can see little round lights mounted on the steps. I also need to install my solar power rope lights up inside of the pergola. Neighbors are going to think that we are having a disco or a space ship has landed!!!!! Thanks for all of the nice comments!
