How bad is the economy near you?

Recommended Posts

truckin88

Just wondering, since people here are from all over the world, how bad is the economy near you. In NY, August/Sept the economy really dipped. In addition to my regular job, I drive a front load garbage truck for my family's business, and all customers are complaining, cutting service, and a number went out of business. I notice everyone is cutting back on purchases etc. When restaurant's boxes are light, we know it is dead for those businesses. Just wondering how it is in other places.

Note: Not trying to start a political rant, just wondering where it is booming and busting in the country and world.

I just left the construction field after 24 years of it and landed a management type job. So for me the economy sucked while I was dependant on the construction trades but all is great now. Even stepped into a nice pay increase to boot.

In the commercial roofing industry I hear all about how bad things are from the contractors that bid my specs/jobs however I do not see them bidding the jobs too tight. :)

I'm a lineman for Indiana/Michigan Power. We are used to building new transformer banks and supplying power for factories/businesses. In the last two years, we have been doing more and more disconnects and wreck-out jobs from businesses closing. Our local unemployment in around 17% while out state is still around 10% and rising. Housing is way down while W/H prices are way up!

Well after the wife went shopping today I think she should have boosted the economy quite a lot..Came home with the back of the van dragging the ground :USA::wh::)

No it is not really all that great here in Michigan. Lots of people out of work, lots of forclosed homes around.

The economy around Schuylkill County, Pa. is real bad. Lot of businesses are closing their doors. Some minimum wage and part time jobs are out there, but I'm better off staying on unemployment until something better paying comes along. They say the economy is gettin' better, not around here. :)

I have been laid off for most of the year. My company closed its doors and moved parts to Canada and Mexico. And we had a 60 million dollar back log. We were told by the company they would be saving .5 % in labor costs. I lost a 21 dollar an hour job and thrown into a job market that wants to start you out at half that. At least I'm getting schooling out of this.

And I was union. Sorry to say it but our union rolled over on this. Not against unions but was very unimpressed by the one I was in. afl cio local 751. And was told that there union hall has so many laid off that there was no apprenticeships open.

Anyway here in butler county PA there isn't much and what there is there are so many trying to get jobs that its just flooded. I have a friend who works for a big hospital near us and he does the hiring. He said that a normal job posting might get about 50 applicants now might get several hundred.

No I don't think the recession is over.

The counties around here with the least unemployment are around the 9.6%. As you get away from the most populated areas it goes up to 11.5% or more. This was just a dozen counties in our area. I believe that unemployment nation wide is more like 20%.

Geez what's wrong with you guys? According to a panel of "experts" the recession ended in June 2009, and we all know that figures don't lie (but liars figure). Boy we really need a "kiss my a$$" smilie for the "experts". Seriously guys, I hope all of you can get back to work at good paying jobs really soon.

I work for a municipal electric utility so my job is safe. They froze promotions and raises which kind of sucks because as the senior man I was supposed to move up into a much better paying job when one of the managers retired. Oh well. My biggest worry is that the state hasn't made municipalities pay into the state pension fund for 11 of the past 14 years so there might not be any pension money for retirement :) And we all know what kind of shape Social Security is in.................
