The Toolman 22 #3 Posted September 17, 2010 Well, dang it. It was on just awhile ago. Show a guy climbing the last 200 ft on a 1700 ft radio tower to do repairs on the lite on the very top. Had a video cam on his helmet. Scared me to death an I don't scare that easy

wallfish 18,072 #10 Posted September 17, 2010 I've done quite a few tower jobs in the past. Mostly repairing antennas, cables or connectors. Some installs of new gear too. The highest I've been is about 600 ft. I love the views and have had eagles flying under me. It pays real well too and wish I had more of it to do. When done correctly it's fairly safe. The Toolman 22 #11 Posted September 17, 2010 I've done quite a few tower jobs in the past. Mostly repairing antennas, cables or connectors. Some installs of new gear too. But watchin' that 175lb? guy grab them bolts sticking out of the side with no safety belt/rope hooked on anything...... Never know when one of those bolts will be corroded or ready to BREAK. I've seen it happen back in my younger pole climbing for the cable co. days. That was my problem with watching it.
wallfish 18,072 #12 Posted September 17, 2010 That one is definately up there and anybody should have some fear. I always had butterflies in my stomach eveytime. I can tell you that no matter how calm the wind is on the ground, it is always blowing up there. Like the video says, and I agree, "It's much less tireing to free climb than hook up every 2 or 3 feet". More safe too because you're not using your hands for hooking up and unhooking instead of holding on. Some towers have a safety cable that you can hook onto that runs most of the way up the side but you still have to unhook at every stand off that supports it. rmaynard 16,291 #13 Posted September 17, 2010 I used to climb an 85 footer on a pretty regular basis. That was when I was young. Now, anything higher than a 20 foot ladder gives me vertigo. Just watching the video gave me "butterflies". Wow, it take some kind of nerve to do a 1768 foot climb without safety lines. Bob
B-8074 20 #14 Posted September 17, 2010 :) I did a job out in Council Bluffs, Iowa. putting up a new power house back in 2005. I was all over that place, from top to bottom. But walking the Iron when you are still alittle tippsy from last nights fun on the town. Well lets just say 4 inch beams look even small when they won't stay still. :USA:
Buzz 502 #15 Posted September 18, 2010 I'm not scared of heights. I'll climb as high as they want me to as long as I can keep one foot on the ground....... :)
dclarke 4,082 #16 Posted September 18, 2010 the only reason i have a ladder is in case i have to go down in a hole. no way i'm doin that! :)
Don1977 605 #17 Posted September 18, 2010 I took little trip back in 1967 to a place called Vietnam. I was on a ship called the USS Jamestown. It had a 110 foot mask on the fore deck with another 25' above the water. We had some long wire antennas that need the insulators cleaned. Moats and I were the only ones that would go up and clean them. We would go up early on the workday and kill time up there until lunch, because no one was coming up after us. The ship was 40' wide and you could look straight down at times and not see anything but water, the ship would be over behind you. We would be moving back and forth some where between 60 to 70'. It was a great ride, I did it 2 or 3 different times. :)
Duff 206 #18 Posted September 18, 2010 My hat is off to you guys that have climbed or can climb. My nuts are still tight from watching that video. Funny part is, I used to love heights until I quit drinking altogether. Let me clarify - I liked heights even when I was sober between binges. Now I've got a first class case of acrophobia. Go figure! Duff :wh:
Greg Parnell 6 #19 Posted September 18, 2010 I'd like to ride the elevator to 1600ft and look around, but that's it, no higher!!
MikesRJ 558 #20 Posted September 18, 2010 I think, if I were going to the top of that one, I'd just wear a ram-air chute. You can make a pretty good jump from that height. Makes getting down a lot quicker too! But then at that height you'd have to be a qualified "Expert" jumper to beat the FAA's 2500' minimum-safe jump-height requirement. The climbers sure are "ballsy" characters though.
popwheelie 0 #21 Posted September 18, 2010 Wow, I'd fall for sure! Hats off to those who can do that.

KC9KAS 4,744 #23 Posted September 19, 2010 I went up our old 105' water tower and the new one built in 1985 (also 105') and that was all I could do and that was with a safety belt/cable. I guess the reason I don't have a HAM antenna....heights scare me!
