dodge78 90 #1 Posted September 16, 2010 A guy has a 418 for sale, He said he parked it because it was loosing power. It was parked about 3-4 years ago. Here is a list of questions: 1; Is it more likly that the engine or the tranny is the problem? 2; Is there any compatability between the C series attachments and the 418? 3; How much trouble will $150 get me into? Jim_M 178 #2 Posted September 16, 2010 1. Hard to say without running it and seeing for yourself 2. 100% compatible 3. Go for it, you can always part it out and make some good money if you decide it's not worth fixing.
Kelly 1,028 #3 Posted September 16, 2010 All the attachments will interchange, and for $150 I'd buy it if only to part out, i'd ask if he would take $100. Ok so Jim was typing at the same time as me, but we said the same thing.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,059 #4 Posted September 17, 2010 You can get into NO trouble at $150 !! That could be a very good find and a simple fix. If you have a compression tester then bring it with you and test the compression.
Roger from southern Iowa 1 #5 Posted September 17, 2010 I agree with Stevebo. Take your compression tester with you.

gattonde 1 #11 Posted September 17, 2010 For $150 you can't go wrong. I own two 418-8's and also a C160. All the attachements are interchangable. I wish you the best of luck with it. I don't see a lift arm in the pictures. If it has the electric lift, selling that alone would more then pay you back your cost of purchase. By the way if it does have the electric lift and you do part it out, I would be more then willing to buy it from you, they are hard to find. Dan
dobeleo 7 #12 Posted September 17, 2010 Can you test the compression on the 18 Hp Kohler engine? My 312-A Kohler K301 has an low compression easy start feature Dan
Rideawaysenior 25 #13 Posted September 17, 2010 I's say, you have to run it. Really can't say where the power loss is from without that. Did the PO say that the engine lost power or did the tractor slow down and lose hill climbing ability after a while. The tranny may just need a fluid and filter change. That can work wonders for those. The engine, try a tune up. I would also pull engine shroud off and look at the cooling fins and the heads. You could be losing compression from bad head gaskets. There are a lot of possibilities either way. $150.00 is worth that all day long though. It also looks like you have the hub bac set there. Those are worth a good amount of coin if they clean up nice.
