wallfish 16,023 #1 Posted September 15, 2010 I found another project for the hoe and doubt this would have been considered if I didn't have it. We decidided to put all the utility wires under ground so I had to dig a 3 ft deep trench about 140 ft long. Even the little 654 got into the action. This was the biggest test for the hoe so far. It held up pretty good except the 2 stabilizers. I ripped both of them off at the pivot points near the base and had to weld some repairs. It also bent a 1" pin for the ram. There were some big rocks and a few large tree roots.

sorekiwi 761 #15 Posted September 16, 2010 Very impressive John! What do you think the cause of the failure was? Not designed strong enough at that point? or just a big rock in the wrong place at the wrong time?
VinsRJ 721 #16 Posted September 16, 2010 Very nice John. Did the town give you any business for putting the wires underground?

wallfish 16,023 #19 Posted September 16, 2010 Very impressive John! What do you think the cause of the failure was? Not designed strong enough at that point? or just a big rock in the wrong place at the wrong time? The design is solid, my welds suck. I heard the welds on the pivot tubes break but kept on going. That point takes all of the presure plus the weight. The bucket was deep in the hole and 4' out so it was pulling the tractor more backwards instead of down when they ripped off. I fixed the first one and about 10 min later the other side let go. Once the welds broke it was only a matter of time. I'm lucky that a local metal shop had the DOM tube in stock. It wasn't too big of a deal since the base it connects to wasn't damaged. I'll make some new ones and do a better job on 'em this time.

Coadster32 793 #23 Posted September 16, 2010 Dam John, that's alot of work! Nice to see the horses being used. I wouldn't want to dig that trench (I've got enough character). What do you do when the wires get to the pole? Does an electrician hook that up, town permits, etc? I like the idea, and thought you could do this at my house also! :)
