Buzz 502 #1 Posted September 13, 2010 How many of you use the E-ZPass system to pay tolls, and do you use it when towing your trailers? The reason I'm asking is that back in July we went to Jacktown. My buddy Zeke towed my trailer with his pick-up using his E-ZPass. A couple of weeks ago I got a ticket in the mail for not paying toll on the PA Turnpike and it had a picture of the back of my trailer showing my license plate. The ticket is for $62.50! I sent them a letter explaining the situation and said at the same time in the same toll lane his transponder was paying the toll. I haven't heard back but he received my ticket last week. He's fighting it now. We have never had problems with the bridge tolls but this is the first time we used the Turnpike. Meanwhile I signed up for E-ZPass NJ and tried to register my trailer's license plate but couldn't online. I called their toll free number and was told it wasn't necessary in NJ and most people don't. I finally convinced her to do it after explaining what type trailer I had. "When you're driving and pass a pick-up full of Mexicans towing a trailer full of lawn mowers, that's the type trailer I have" . She broke out laughing and said I know exactly what you have and registered it. Sorry for the long post and rant, but are your trailers registered with E-ZPass or have any of you had this problem? Waiting to hear from the PA owners especially.
fireman 1,022 #2 Posted September 13, 2010 I have two EZ passes. The first one is for just my truck. The second one is for when I pull my camper. It is specific to the number of axles including my truck and my camper. You can get the second one for free from them.
Horse'n Around 22 #3 Posted September 13, 2010 Wow , what a nightmare, I hope that it gets worked out in your favor. I have only been on a turnpike one time and it was because of a wrong turn. I was on my way to pick up a WH in New Jersey that I bought from MrFixit on the yahoo Wheel Horse forum back in 2004 and I accidentally went the wrong way and I ended up on the turnpike, OOPS! I drove to the next exit and turned around and went back. Luckily it was a cheap mistake I finally found my way to Mr Fixit's (Joe's) place and got my 702 then I turned around and went back to Chambersburg. Rideawaysenior 25 #4 Posted September 13, 2010 I have my cars and trailer added to the same EZ Pass on the vehicle. I've been on all the toll roads in NY, NJ, MA, and NH with it and trailer in tow and I've never had an issue. I think that perhaps the state where you have it registered may be the problem. I can register mine on line very easy.

Butch 194 #6 Posted September 13, 2010 Geez Buzz, now I'm wondering if I'll get a ticket. I rented a Uhaul trailer to go up the Garden State Parkway and back about a month ago. But I thought I've towed a trailer before and somehow EZ Pass saw it and just added in the extra charge for the trailer. I think it was when I rented a uhaul trailer to bring my son home from college in Pittsburgh and I used the turnpike. Yeah, somehow EZ Pass new I had a trailer and tacked on the difference to my bill. I didn't even know you could register a trailer.
Save Old Iron 1,568 #7 Posted September 13, 2010 I believe some states have a sensor installed in EZ pass lanes to actually count the axles on a vehicle. Similar to technology used to stage cars at the drag races, a sensor can triggered from the tires interrupting a beam across the EZ Pass lane and count the axles - feeds that info back thru your account and bills you accordingly. Apparently, not all states are the equipped with the sensors.
stevasaurus 23,088 #8 Posted September 13, 2010 I found out, by a ticket, that just because you have a transponder in your car, if the car is not registered on the E-Z Pass, you may get a ticket. The problem was taken care of with a phone call, the ticket with-drawn and the tolls payed for. Learned a lot on the phone with those people...they were very helpful. When I went to the Charlott show, I rode with JoeBob from Minnesota. I went online and put his truck on my E-Z Pass for the weekend, and then took it off. I had no problem. Buzz, if that guy would have put your trailer on his pass, I think all would be well...a phone call should care for it. One other thing...anyone's E-Z Pass from Ill, Ind, Ohio, Penn, Mass, NJ and any other state in the northeast U.S. is compatible in any of those states. I set up my account online, and life is good. I have 4 vehicles on 2 transponders with the same account number. :)
Operator 7 #9 Posted September 14, 2010 This was one of our discussions at LeSuer wasn't it Steve? Trailers and E-Z pass. Don't need them up here, but can I get one if I don't live there [E-Z pass state]? Randy
gwgdog66 23 #10 Posted September 14, 2010 I have a "Pike-Pass" Okie version. Trailers in Oklahoma don't need license plates. I pull a trailer at times with a 2 axle pike pass. I guess I need to look at my statement the next time a run through the pikepass lane with a trailer and see if it charged for 2 axles instead of 3 They never have sent me a ticket. DMK855 15 #11 Posted September 14, 2010 I have never had a problem using EZ Pass with trailers in Pa., Del., or Md. None of my trailers were registered with them either!!!

Don't need them up here, but can I get one if I don't live there [E-Z pass state]? Randy Yes Randy...we talked about this. I would think you can get a pass without living in Ill. The point is, at least in Ill., that by using the pass, the tolls are half the price. That really adds up in savings, especially when a trailer can double the toll. Try www.getipass.com or ill.tollway.com or http://www.illinoistollway.com/portal/page...&_schema=PORTAL I am not sure if the I-Pass will work in Oklahoma, but a phone call would answer that. In Ill. #1-800-UC-IPASS :)
Ken B 3,166 #13 Posted September 14, 2010 Wow I better stop scootin thru the EZ-Pass then! 62.50 times at least eight wouldn't be very pretty. :)
