Brrly1 1,146 #1 Posted September 5, 2010 My question would be. Can you weld stainless steel to black pipe? I have a friend of mine who made me some stainless steel plates for wheel extensions so I can bolt on a extra set of wheels. I am just curious if I can do this or do I possibly need to get stainless steel pipe, which actually I don't even know if they make such a thing. Just asking? Have a great weekend. porkchop 1 #2 Posted September 5, 2010 They do make stainless pipe or tubing. I would use it because the black pipe to stainless will not be strong enough.Take a magnet to your metal scrap yard and you should be able to find some.Use stainless welding rod also. Butch 194 #3 Posted September 5, 2010 I can ask my welding teacher this Wednesday when I start welding class! I'm a little nervous about going back to school. Hope I ain't the oldest in the class.
faster 11 #4 Posted September 6, 2010 Yes. I`ve welded stainless and carbon steel together at work a few times and never had any problems. And as far as the welder I used a mig with gas and carbon steel wire. PS. the parts that I welded did not have to be super strong just welded together. mavfreak 11 #5 Posted September 7, 2010 yes you can but as stated not strong at all. stainless pipe is the way to go. Also make sure you use a gas mix of 97/3. Give a much nicer weld with stainless. I welded with stainless for 12 years. And was always told that the two steels don't bond. In some cases the weld will be ok if no stress is put on the weld. So I would say use your best judgement. Also on a bet I welded aluminum to stainless. not petty but held for bet. more or less I melted the aluminum to the stainless.
