dgoyette 12 #1 Posted August 2, 2010 Well I have always had a deep desire for a garage but could not afford it. Well I still can't so I built a shed. For most of July I have been working on a new shed for the horses. Now keep in mind I am not a builder, this is only the second shed I have built so it took me some time but I am very happy with how it turned out. Floor frame Here is a picture of the braces I built to support the floor joists for the weight of the horses. I used 2 x 8's for the floor joists. The shed actually began life as an idea to build a 10' x 12' and here is the original frame of the 10' x 12'. I decided it wasn't big enough and for a small increase in cost I could extend it out another 5 feet by using 12 foot rafters on one side. Since I was building on a slope I dropped he floor of the addition by a foot which also gives more head room. Here are a couple of frame pictures that show how I used 2 x 4's for the wall to add the lower section. Pre-staining: And after staining it this past Sunday. A shot of the inside - sorry not a great photo So there it is, another coat of stain, some finishing touches, some ramps and I can move some of the horses in.
Roger from southern Iowa 1 #2 Posted August 2, 2010 Very good work. I need to build one like that....only a 'little bit" larger. Something to keep ALL the tractors and pickup/trailer in. My checkbook says not for a very long time. :D
MaineDad 87 #3 Posted August 2, 2010 Maybe we can have an official RS tour this Sunday with MRM and see some horses inside. Really nice work!

Sparky-(Admin) 23,139 #5 Posted August 3, 2010 Looks awsome Darren . So what will hang from the overhanging beam on the front eve? A block-n-tackle thingy maybe? Mike......
dgoyette 12 #6 Posted August 3, 2010 Very good work. I need to build one like that....only a 'little bit" larger. Something to keep ALL the tractors and pickup/trailer in. My checkbook says not for a very long time. Thanks Roger! I know I have been saving up for about 6 months. Total cost was just under $1,700.00 including the building permit. I got a great deal from one of our local suppliers, Hammond Lumber. Even free delivery of the lumber.
dgoyette 12 #7 Posted August 3, 2010 Looks awsome Darren . So what will hang from the overhanging beam on the front eve? A block-n-tackle thingy maybe? Mike...... Thanks very much. I haven't decided what will hang there yet. I kinda had a block n' tackle in mind when I decided not to cut the ridge beam and let it hang out like that. Probably won't be that useful or functional but will look cool. I will have to give it some thought.

stoneman 10 #10 Posted August 3, 2010 I like how that addition got started about 1/2 way through. I think I know what you were thinkin', and it looks like there's plenty of room for another one as soon as you need it. Do you think you'll need it? :D

Roger from southern Iowa 1 #12 Posted August 3, 2010 A lift of some kind would be very handy for getting to those hard to reach places of these horses. You're giving me ideas!!

dgoyette 12 #17 Posted August 4, 2010 Great job Darren! Looks like storage in the attic also, no? Hi Chris, yes I do have attic storage. You must have noticed the opening I made. I am probably going to lay some plywood and maybe store some left over lumber up there too. Thanks for all the comments guys...appreciate it. Once I get the horses arranged I will take another photo. I still need to get a photo of the full herd too.
