Cherry Tomatoes and Whiskey Barrels

Recommended Posts

MaineDad

We have a whiskey barrel on each side of the stairs going up to the back deck. Usually we plant colorful flowers, but this year I decided to plant Super Sweet 100 Cherry Tomatoes in both barrels instead. WOW - now I can sit on the steps and reach over for a quick snack

Can't beat that. Next time try a grape tomato in one of the barrels. My wife likes those better than the cherry tomato. Those two tomato's just keep on giving when the big ones quiet for the year.

A nice advantage of container grown tomatoes is that you don't have to worry so much about blight. Cherry tomatoes are my favorite, especially the orange ones

Micah I did read the links about your garden. It looks to be pretty good size.

Our tomatoes are still green. Seems like they're late turning red this year. Nice big healthy plants but no red tomatoes.

A problem we never had was squirrels. Last year they started taking our tomatoes.

They're doing it again this year. One stands watch while the other takes them. Then they climb up the corner of the house and have a picnic on the roof. At first it was cute. Now it's war.

Just picked my first cherry tomato this morning. Lots more coming. Can't wait for the big guys to ripen though. Nothing like a fresh, locally grown tomato on your sandwich in the summer.
