Junkyard transaxle 1 1/8 inch

I picked up a junkyard wheel horse transaxle recently. It is a 8 speed with high/low.

The transaxle shifts into all gears and turns as it should but slips.

If I hold the axle and turn the input shaft in any gear the axle will not turn. But with my hands off of the axles everything works as it should.

What is the most likely problem and how much might it cost?

does the other axle still spin? if so thats just the diff working as it should. if one wheel gets stuck it diverts all the power to the other so as not to destroy the transmission.

It could just be the fact that you're only holding one axle, or it could be bad axle gears or pinions, etc.

It only costs the price of a gasket to open it up and look inside. At least you'll know what you have - and if anything is actually wrong. :thumbs:

I must have been only holding one axle. I put my feet on each axle and turned the input shaft and it was what you guys said.

I guess I can feel good about spending $40 for the transaxle and a 42" RD deck!
