Stigs Shack... The next Generation!!

Recommended Posts

Stigian

Good morning Guy's and Girls from a beautiful sunny Sunday in deepest, darkest (well, not quite so dark today) Kent.

Sorry for the lack of post from me for quite a while, this moving house lark has kept me very busy sorting out this, that and the other..

But mostly keeping me busy building a new Workshack from scratch!!!

I'd best get this long story started :wh:

But first a pic of my little Raider 10 at it's new home..

The spot chosen by our new landlord (we share his garden) was...er....

A bit of a mess!!!

But it didn't take Pete and I that long to clear all the junk..

Looking better already!

Looking even better..

Here Pete is clearing ivy and other rubbish from the end of a concrete base the the two er... rather worse for wear shed's are sitting on..

By the end of the day the "chosen" spot looked like this..

Our Landlord kindly let me keep the Raider 10 in his ploy-tunnel :D

Back to the clearing out!!!

All this nice oak had been kept mostly under a plastic sheet for about 8 years..

What wasn't rotten, just crumbled into dust!!!

And to finish off the ground work, lots of concrete blocks were set into the ground at the right height and more or less level :USA:

With all clearing out the way, a base for the new shack was needed.

As luck would have it I decided to bring the decking from our old place..

Just in case it came in handy :D

A few planks were laid on the ground to see quite how big the planned base would be.

On a slightly sad note, a few of weeks after this photo was taken Rob (he who looks daft in the photo) had a heart attack while at work (not that he had noticed!!)

and ended up having a quadruple heart by-pass at Kings Collage Hospital..

The good new is, Rob is getting better and fitter every day :D

IMG_0142.jpg

Not being the sort of people to use decking in the normal way, we turned it on it's side and used it as floor beams..

This 24ft by 12ft construction was carried into place by four people!!

IMG_0143.jpg

It looks quite big at this point in the build!!

IMG_0146.jpg

Cutting and fitting all the X-members took quite a while!!

Lot's of brick/bits of concrete/paving slabs were used to prop the frame up, as i didn't fancy a saggy floor!!

IMG_0148.jpg

Pete and I enjoying the first mug off coffee in, or is it on, the new Workshack :ychain:

IMG_0151.jpg

And a little while later enjoying a pint while waiting for lunch at the local pub :USA:

IMG_0152.jpg

While we were away... The chickens came out to play!!

IMG_0153.jpg

Now were starting to get somewhere with the basic frame going up..

IMG_0155.jpg

And building materials being delivered..

Bit of a wide load the feather board :wh:

The weather has been a bit of a pain at times, so a tarp was hung up to keep us dry during the rain showers..

The basic frame is more or less complete at this point..

IMG_0158.jpg

Lot's of feather board, nine nice thick OSB boards and five roof beams await their turn to become part of the build.

IMG_0159.jpg

One of the big steps was getting the floor down.

Here's the first board cut and fitted :D

IMG_0160.jpg

Another big step was getting the first of the roof boards on..

IMG_0162.jpg

It's nice to have a good solid feeling floor... when you need to use a ladder to get the roof sorted :D

IMG_0163.jpg

Speaking of the roof..... Only one board left to be fitted..

IMG_0168.jpg

Some battening was needed to go around the edge of the roof..

As luck would have it, there happens to be a builders yard just up the road, so Garry and I had a quick walk up there, and a slow walk back with 60ft of battening on our shoulders!!

IMG_0174.jpg

The back wall was clad outside in OSB to save time as I needed to get the Workshack water tight asap..

The couple of square-ish bit of OSB were only nailed on the side to act as a wind break for those coffee drinking/smoking a roll-up kinda moments..

Oh yes, the battening made it's way under the edge of the roof boards as well :USA:

IMG_0175.jpg

One of the job's I'm not that fond of is laying roofing felt!!

IMG_0176.jpg

It was also very hard to get a photo of the fully felted roof...

So this will have to do :wh:

The door was trial fitted... HHmmm.. something doesn't look quite right with the fit!!

Quite a few weeks later we discovered my spirit level was not very.... accurate :D

IMG_0179.jpg

A window was needed at each and of the shack, but to save time a couple of spare panels from Pete's conservatory were used.. Opening glass windows will be fitted at a later date..

Here is Garry pulling aluminum strips out of the panels..

IMG_0187.jpg

Window fitted and the first wall to be clad in feather board :USA:

IMG_0193.jpg

Yet another window and more cladding :thanks:

IMG_0199.jpg

Coffee break during the cladding of the other end wall.

IMG_0202.jpg

The little Raider parked in it's new living quarters..

IMG_0203.jpg

To fit the double opening doors that came from my old Workshack extension (I really should finish the thread I started about taking down the extension) they needed a couple of wooden beams to add extra strength, so the old OSB cladding could be taken off..

IMG_0204-1.jpg

And the frames hung to see how they looked..

IMG_0205.jpg

Pete and I worked our magic with feather board cladding and battening...

IMG_0211.jpg

And created not one...

IMG_0213.jpg

But two opening doors :wh:

IMG_0215.jpg

Time was running out before I had to clear all my tools, bits and of course my 312-8

out of the old Workshack and the new Workshack had to be water tight..

But we were winning the battle :D

Time to add a shed to fill up the last hole in the back wall..

But first the shed roof needed a bit of a trim..

IMG_0218.jpg

Hole blocked from the outside..

IMG_0223.jpg

Extra space on the inside :ychain:

IMG_0222.jpg

With one day to go before the big Workshack contents move, I decided that as we had enough feather board left over, the back wall could have the OSB removed and cladding put up instead..

It was a bit tight getting down the back of the two sheds :wwp:

IMG_0229.jpg

Finally after all the work the new Workshack was water tight and empty...

IMG_0228.jpg

But not for long!!!!!!

Looks great Ian! Is the ground as wet as it looks? I see your AG tires are leaving plenty of marks.

And whats in the pond behind the shed? Big fish??

Mike......
