check fluid in tranny GT 14

Can anyone advise me how I can check the hydro in the tranny of my GT 14?

I can see the filter by the driver's right side tire. Is this a simple spin off? And will a whole bunch of fluid come dumping out upon changing?

Lastly, the manual states "type A auto tranny fluid" for the tranny. Is this still appropriate?

Flip up the seat. There is a dipstick underneath it. If you remove the filter oil will come out. I have been told to use a good grade Dextron compatible transmission fluid as a substitute for Type "A".

Now here in lie's the problem. I see the filler tube but there isn't a dipstick. The tube has a square nut on top for a cap. Is there any other way to check the level?
