Beware of UPS shipping quote

Recommended Posts

Rideawaysenior

Okay, I had quoted a high back seat today (not the one that sold for $381.00 that was not mine) quoted for shipping from my address to another members in MO. I entered the required info on their site and it gave me a quote of $26.98 for ground service. I get to the UPS store today and Ground Shipping was over $60.00 because (Get this) the seat is considered an oversized item yay. Just use extreme caution is all when you use their shipping quote system, you will get hosed.

If you don't want to pay an arm and a leg, NEVER use the UPS store. They are privately owned franchises that can mark-up the UPS charge as much as they want.

I recently shipped a seat in a box that was 24" x 22" x 18". The total weight was 17 pounds. I calculated my shipping charges online, paid online, printed my label, then dropped the box off with the first UPS truck that I saw.

My total cost was about $22.00.

My son had to ship a camera back for warranty repairs. Instead of having me ship it back using my online internet ship account, which would have cost him about $10.00, he went to the UPS store and they ripped him for $30.00.

Lesson learned the hard way.

A few things about UPS; its cheapest if the size is kept under 3 cubic feet, price goes up after that. Weight does not effect price until 70 lbs. Over sized is calculated by : length + ( 2 x width) + ( 2 x height ) up to 165 inches, then it is oversized and will not ship even if it weighs 5 pounds. Shipping to a buisness is cheaper than to a residence. ALWAYS shop around, it may be lot cheaper somewhere else.

i ship alot of stuff I sell on ebay and found FedEx is cheaper than UPS by quite abit and they are right next door to each other, and yes the UPS stores charge more go to a customer center they will be the same as on line or at least very close.

Oh well, you live and learn. I've used UPS on many occasions and found them really reasonable. It was an expencive lesson to learn.

my UPS store guy is pretty close to the online calculation. but there is allways that time they slip in a higher fuel sur-charge and also add extra for rural routes. witch most of the tractor guys i send too live out in no mans land B) .

i try and qoute my listings close but sometimes have to add a little more to make up for the extras the store charge's. also if the box is not squre they charge more.

I agree with Rick

Check out USPS always too. I shipped an oversized wheel horse steel seat pan to Florida in a taped up bunch of cardboard and I think it was less than $20.

I was surprised they took it and I was surprised at the cost. And it did get there!

Anyone can sign up for a UPS Internet Ship account. You can pay for shipping with a credit card. You go online, process the shipment, print a label, attach it to your package and either drop it at any UPS shipping center like the UPS store, Staples, Office Depot, etc. or just give it to a UPS driver on the street. What could be easier? The rates aren't quite as cheap as corporate rates, but it sure beats the price charged by the UPS store and other shipping centers.
