chazm 413 #1 Posted January 6, 2010 Here's a long story for ya ...Just wondering what you guys think ... My goofy neighbor ( trust me ...the name fits her ) from across the street called me today asking if she or one of her sons could use my tractor to plow open their lower driveway. <_< Well of corse I said NO-body drives my tractor. BUT her husband could use my walk behind snow blower and that I didn't want her or her kids using it. Well she started in on me about how her husband's alt. was going out on his truck & she had to get their spare truck out so he could use it . I told her if I got time tomorrow or the next day I would open her driveway. She starts in on me again about WHY her kids couldn't use the tractor or snow blower today. At this point the hairs are standing up on the back of my very red neck So in a few choice words I told her I seen how her kids use their Cub to mow grass & I won't trust them to use to use my push mower, much less the Raider 10 AND that her husband didn't say so much as a thank you for using the snow blower the last time it snowed or offered to pay for gas. Again she starts crying me a river about using the tractor ,at this point I ended the conversation. I don't know ... Is it me or Won't some people just take NO for an answer

VinsRJ 723 #3 Posted January 6, 2010 I try to avoid my neighbors as much as possible just for this reason. I wave and say "hi" from time to time but thats it. If someone comes knock'n I tell my daughter to be quiet and tip toe away from the door.
truckin88 104 #4 Posted January 6, 2010 I plowed my new neighbr out with the 120 last snow storm, since his blower busted a belt. I was having a blast, he offered to pay I said no, he brought over muffins as a thank you 2 days later, 2 weeks later he bought a 312 with weights and chains and a plow....hahhaa sweet WH neighborhood. He paid through the nose I am sure, local dealer, delivered it and it was when we were suppose to get slammed with snow. Nice guy though.
porkchop 1 #5 Posted January 6, 2010 My neighbors are just the opposite we share everything and if something breaks I fix it because he has no mechanical skills at all. I bought him a tool set last year for christmas. We could never move because we could never replace him and his wife. We are always there for each other when someones sick or thru thick and thin. I can,t Imagine them not being there.
Ken B 3,166 #6 Posted January 6, 2010 I plow out a few of my neighbors. The guy across the street I always do his drive because he is polite, he never gets on my nerves, he doesn't expect me to plow him out and he always thanks me. Every once in awhile we share a beer or two. Your neighbor has alot of nerve! I wouldn't have any patience with her.
rmaynard 15,964 #7 Posted January 6, 2010 My neighbors never ask, but I plow them out or use my snow blower for them when I feel they need help. I was asked one time by my next door neighbor if he could borrow the B-100 to pull a downed limb out of his back yard. I simply replied that my home owners insurance policy does not allow anyone but me to operate my tractors. I don't know if that is true, but he never asked again. And no, I don't think you were wrong. Bob
Jim_M 179 #8 Posted January 6, 2010 I guess I'm lucky. For the most part I have good neighbors. There's one guy that's not the best neighbor but he's still not a bad neighbor if that makes sense. We all help each other out whenever we can. I plow the driveway for the 89 year old widow next door and she bakes me pies, seems like a fair trade to me. Shuboxlover 479 #10 Posted January 6, 2010 We have three neighbors in our cul-de-sac.....we live out in the country and only one of the neighbors is equipped to move massive amounts snow...one has a walk behind snow-thrower When ever we get so much as a couple inches, I am out the playing, I mean moving snow. I even do our almost 1/4 long shared blacktop road. I never expect payment...a simple thank you is more than enough, but this year already one brought me a case of my favorite beverage one brought me a $35 gift certificate to a local BBQ joint in town and the other has bought me a $50 gift card to a local Japanese sushi bar in town It is too bad that not everybody has good neighbors, but if I had neighbors like yours.......well lets just say i'm glad I don't. Hope everything works out
Ken B 3,166 #11 Posted January 6, 2010 I'll bet alot of the "neighbors" out there never once stopped and thought that our old tractors we ride around on are collectable, highly sought after and are in most cases considered a member of the family! I have a few neighbors that do stop and pay compliments when they see a tractor I'm riding that they really like.
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,409 #12 Posted January 6, 2010 Chaz, I am the neighborhood plow guy since I work from home and when it snows iIam out there all the time. I would have to say that she is too pushy and she is way out of line. It sounds to me like she is venting about other issues she has going on. If it was me I would have been over there as soon as she asked prior to her having to be pushy but that is just me with another reason for seat time. You had your own reasons to say no when she asked and she should have left it at that. Good luck-
gwgdog66 23 #13 Posted January 6, 2010 Mocc, I feel for ya. My neighbors are great. I think you handled the situation way better than I would have. The only person I let use my Wheel Horse is my brother, and that's just because he lets me use his Wheel Horse Implements
JimD 3,345 #14 Posted January 6, 2010 i have a great neighbor two doors over with whom i've shared tools, time, and sweat on projects we've done over the last 30 years. he' a great guy who used to have me come over and we'd take a salt shaker to the garden for a fresh tomato or three. i wish we could still do that, but his health is such that he can't even get out of the house now. the neighbors on either side of me however, uh, the Calmpetts and the Beau-dines, are another story :banghead:
jtmoyer 1 #15 Posted January 6, 2010 i don't mind loaning people i hardly even know a tool or two, but one of horses, there has to be a line some ware. when it snows i out with the blower after work cleaning out the drives of the people on my block that have "not gotten to it yet". i have a blast and it has gotten me some goodies every year to christmas . i have a friend that thinks he is going to borrow one of the herd to plow snow in his hood. NOT going to happen. i'll come over and plow. i did let him till with it under close supervision last year.

Operator 7 #17 Posted January 6, 2010 Those neighbors are out there. I had a new couple move to the area last year and after the first snow I seen him out there shoveling, well I felt sorry for him and drove over there with my Bobcat and ended up plowing him out all winter! never came out. This was last winter he never came over all summer to even say "thanks" nothing. This winter our first snowfall was around 6" and then we had another 4" I haven't plowed him and no one else has either! He just drives over it all, up hill. He'll shovel a path for each wheel. And all I wanted was an "thanks". Randy
Confused99 2 #18 Posted January 6, 2010 I live in a residential neighborhood and feel I have pretty decent neighbors. This is the first full winter I have been here and have been doing a couple of the neighbors drives. The last storm I did 5 neighbors drives 2 times for the storm. I just tell them that if I have the time I can do it but don't always plan on me being there. I get thank you's from a couple and the one sprays my yard for weeds and bugs for a very good price so I feel it is worth it. Plus I get some additional seat time which is nice. I think your neighbor was way out of line. The couple times I have been asked if someone can use my tractor I usually say no, but I would be happy to do it for you with my tractor Jason
bmuone 15 #19 Posted January 6, 2010 Yeah Chaz you did ok. I would just tell those folks that for safety reasons you do not loan out your equip. If something should happen to those kids you would never be able to live it down. And sure I would plow them a path as soon as I got my tractor fixed. chazm 413 #20 Posted January 6, 2010 Well guys thanks for the info We've been here a little over a year now and when we had the last 2 snows I was out plowing eveybody that needed help . I helped the guy that lives beside her, unload his new snow blower after the last snow .His wife said that we where the only people that talk to them because they had pissed off everybody else - go figure I can probly tell you guys at lease 50 stories of gooffy stuff these people have done in the last year. Well - Like they say ,ya can't pick your neighbors Do ya think if I tell the township this story, they would give me a permit to build a fence high enough to keep them out ?? Thanks again
Rideawaysenior 25 #21 Posted January 6, 2010 I love where I live too. I am often home and am also the neighborhood plow guy. A few of the members here have been to my home and know it's a small neighborhood. There is one other guy that tries to beat me to it. He has a John Deere 4200 4x4 diesel. This past storm, he goes by sees me out on the 520 doing my drive and then I tackle two more. Then I bring out the 308 with the front mount rotary broom. He stops and sees how nice that broom cleans right down to the pavement and says, put that thing away, your making me look bad because he can't clean down to the pavement like I can. I say, "Bobby, the only thing that makes you look bad is the fact that your not riding a Wheel Horse". He chuckled a bit and away he went. For the most part, my neighbors are good. I have one that is less then nice but I just ignore him as most of the others do and all is well. Sorry you have a neighbor like you do.
rockbuilt 7 #22 Posted January 6, 2010 Growing up in the Suburbs and living in the city and now in the country has taught me that the best neighbor to have is NONE. I only have two neighbors now and they are great one has a 520H so there is no problem there the other is a farmer and takes care of his property very well. we see each other maybe 3 or 4 times a year and it is always good. The most I have ever ask of my neighbor is to help me lift my WH dump cart off my truck as far as loaning I say NO My father told me a long time ago that you would never know how many friends you have until you have a pic up truck and a chain saw and oh how true that is. I think you handled that better than me I would have told her I didn't want her kids looking at my tractor let alone touch it
Confused99 2 #23 Posted January 6, 2010 I should also add that my neighbor across the street is the City Manager for the town I live in. I knew her before I moved in, being on the FD she is for the most part my manager. She has never said anything to me except thanks when I do some work with the WH for her.
