Sorry so long for the update. Max has slowly been doing better over the last couple of days. His vomiting has stopped although he still has bouts of diarrhea but the diarrhea is coming less frequent. He is staying awake longer in the day due to reduction of some of the medicine that makes him sleepy. His temps have returned to normal and all cultures have come back negative for any infection. Overall you can tell he is feeling better because now he is barking orders left and right. He wants to eat but can't due to the mouth sores that are still present. I think this frustrates him. The docs seem to think that he may be on the upswing. As soon as his counts start climbing Max will sart feeling tons better and the mouth sores will start to heal an he will be able to eat. We are hoping this will be in the next week. Keep your fingers crossed!

We will post more news as we get it. Hope everyone has a Great New Year.

Take care,

Jodie

I imagine the Nunns are very busy & haven't had time to check back here.

They do however keep an almost daily log about Max on Face Book & Care Pages if anyone is a member of those sites.

Here's the latest update (1-2-10) though copied form Face Book.

Max is improving in a few areas, His white counts are up to .24 from .13 and show a steady incline, His pain meds are getting reduced today and he has only required three extra doses during the last 24 hours. All blood cultures are negative including stool samples except for the nasal swab came back positive for the common cold (rhino virus) that is where me and Mom most likely got our minor colds from. Jodie seems to have ducked getting it. I am going to go back home today with Grandma filling in to replace me. Max has only complained of his mouth hurting one or two times in the last couple of days and his temp has remained normal, he still has the poops quite often but that should be getting better as should his mouth sores, he still has not eaten and is still sleeping for the most part around the clock. I would expect he will start waking up a bit more with cutting back on the morphine and Benadryl. All in all he has progressed thru at a pretty average rate I would think thru transplant, He had a few worrisome Blood pressures down to 40 ish over 18 and still is on the low side but he always has been for a while now. His white counts should climb rapidly the next few days and he will still most likely get a few more blood transfusions and platelets and hopefully start to get an ANC back soon (that is the number that shows his risk for infection) It is currently at Zero and needs to get above 500 before he can even leave the room I think. He still hurts to much to swallow anything and has not taken any Zoloft in a few days. The telling him that this is the last dose of med that will make him feel good and if he doesn't take it than we are going to give it to the little boy in the next room trick only worked a couple of times, last night he said to just give it to the other kid. Even $$ couldn't talk him in to it. we are gladly taking suggestions on getting him to take tonight's meds if anyone has any creative ideas. So far it is a good start off to the new year, Max's smile should be right around the corner in just a couple few days, you can get an occasional one out of him now but he gets upset when he does and we think it hurts for him to smile as his lips are still scabbed up and the mouth soars still have his lips swollen. Best wishes for everyone for 2010 and Thank you all for being a part of Max's Journey.

The update from today:

Transplant Day +15

Posted 23 minutes ago

Hello Team Max, Grandma is the privileged one back on duty with Max; Dad gets the honor later today and Mom Tomorrow. Max got to get a four hour pass to go to the Reunicci House yesterday where we will get discharged to after we leave the hospital, He is doing pretty good overall and still improving daily, He is still vomiting and has not eaten but is drinking a little bit of water, He is still getting morphine and it helps to keep him from feeling crappy. The Docs and Nurses have changed him back over to oral meds where they can. His skin is starting to peel from the chemotherapy which burned a lot of his skin and darkened it. He still has the poops but hopefully for not much longer. The TPN is getting tapered, that is the IV nourishments. His mood is up and down but pretty good all things considered, Max is having a lot of emotional ups and downs but we are working on them and his will and determination shines at times good and bad. This update is more to tell you all about what is in the future for Max following transplant and our expectations. Max will need to have all of his childhood vaccinations done all over again in the future over the next year, his immune system is back to less than a newborn. He has no protection from anything previously vaccinated from including the flu. Here are some of the side effects we will be looking at for Max. Cataracts can develop between 18 and 24 months following a stem cell transplant. It is recommended that patients receive annual slit lamp eye evaluations. Infertility is very likely in most transplant patients. Lung inflammation after transplantation is a serious concern. Max will be at high risk of second malignancies, which include leukemia, brain tumors and skin cancers. He will get an MRI and lumbar puncture after a month or two to see where the cancer stands. To make you aware of what kind of a diagnosis Max has, it has taken Jodie several months to find a case that closely matches Max

Hello, Just stopping in for an update, Thank you Nylon, Rollerman and Operator for posting the latest ones, Me and Max got to get out of the room for a few hours yesterday to go the room where we get disharged to, it is connected to the hospital. kinda like a motel / studio apartment, Jodie will be coming down for today and tomorrow, Max did eat yesterday and held it down(mac and cheese). I think he will even have a better day today. we could be back home in a couple weeks, perhaps less if there are no complications. Me and Max did finally get to sit down yesterday while he was feeling good to look at quads, while he wont be able to go to any public places for the next few months, He can go outside during the winter months as there is no risk of mold or bacteria in the cold. so he should be able to ride in a few weeks I figure, I hope to get over to a local dealer in the next week, it is gonna be tough as he cannot have any visitors at home for the next 90 days, so no friends, but being able to go outside and ride on his new quad will help to fill some time and help build his strength back up, Hi doc will not be amused to put it lightly at the thought of him riding a quad. They worry about him hitting his head and bringing back the siezures that he had early on when the cancer first started. but they just do not fully know and understand Max like me and Jodie, he is a safe rider and in no hurry, he will wear all protective gear, and the way we look at the situation is if he cannot enjoy doing the things he loves and has fought so hard for than we could not justify putting him thru the cancer treatments and to get where he is. We will continue to let him be the Max he was before cancer. Take care everyone, will stop in again soon. Tom

Home Sweet Home!!!!

Max is home!!!!! Yay!!!! We are going to celebrate the 18th anniversary of my 21st birthday tonight as a family. I am so excited. Max overall is doing well and is started to express that he is hungary which is a good thing. He is not able to eat as much as he used to which is expected because I am sure is stomach has shrank due to no food for quite awhile. The docs are still looking at radiation as the next step due to there is still evidence of cancer when looking at the MRIs. Tom and I have been researching options at this point but am sure that the docs will have the best course of treatment. Max is glad to be back home but not so glad about the restrictions that are in place until day +100. He will not be able to go shopping at Wal-mart (his favorite thing) or have people over to hang out with. The up side, he has what is familar around him.

We will be ordering shirts tomorrow so if anyone would like a shirt or hoodie please email prior to tomorrow afternoon. I will be placing the order soon.

Max has clinic on Tuesday to monitor his blood counts but overall he is holding his own.

We have been doctoring up his room with a "sports theme" and he is really liking it. We will have his football from GRCC with signatures displayed along with the bobble head figures signed by some of the Detroit Tigers given to Max by a good friend John Loose.

Also, Dad and Max will be shopping for a quad tomorrow courtesy of the great folks of Red Square. Max is really excited. Secretly I am looking forward to riding it too:-) We are hoping everyone had a great holiday season with there families. Also we will post pics with the ne addition soon!!!

We will keep everyone updated with new news.

Have a great weekend and take care,

Jodie
