Stigian 1,234 #1 Posted February 23, 2008 Tim asked about my trike in the members photo section, so i thought id explain how it came about I expect some of you guys have other projects/fun play 's builds on the go, so heres what i do when not Wheel Horsing It all started with an old Webb cricket pitch mower. It was soon pulled apart for a repaint. After a while the tuning bug hit, so i built a "sporty" muffler and a straight inlet manifold to replace the "strange engineering idea" updraught manifold The engine ran well and sounded good so i gave it some welly and it went BANG So the poor old Webb after suffering all my abuse was pushed into a corner of the workshop and left to gather dust A couple of months later i was offered a couple of Kawasaki Z200's for a price i couldnt turn down Can you guess where this is heading yet :D
Stigian 1,234 #2 Posted February 23, 2008 Thats right, bung all the bike bits in the Webb This was the point i knew i had "the look" right Add a custom built trailer with wishbone suspention make from cut down kawasaki swing arms. I remember those days when i had hair A lot of ing, smoking and drinking coffee later this was the result lots of fun was had And lots of bits broke After me and The Beast (as the Webb had become known) had been shaken apart too many times (30+mph on steel rollers is er... fun) i though fitting so wheels with air in them might be a good idea. But alas during mock-up it would of been to high to ride safely
Greg B. 1 #3 Posted February 23, 2008 That's wild! Have thos who care for you ever mentioned that you may have a wee bit too much free time.... Greg B.
Stigian 1,234 #4 Posted February 23, 2008 It was at this point that my friend Garry held a Z200 front end to the Beast and said "why not turn i into a trike". I liked his thinking A quick mock-up later turned the idea into reality A bit of cutting and welding parts on to the Beast trailer had it looking more trike like Add an engine and the engine mounts from The Beast. I think this photo was taken about 3 in the morning, back in the days i was young enough to spend all night in the shack Bearings, steel and a sprocket The box spanner bit on the left side of the sprocket fits on the nut that normally holds the front sprocket to the bike gearbox. It bolts to the frame. Follow the chain down a bit and there is a peerless trans from a westwood. A bit of careful cutting and grinding on the trans brake disk soon had it sprocket-like Take 2 rev counter cables and 1 speedo cable. Add a bit of welding, season with hose clips and a couple of bit of hose pipe. Stir together well and you end up with a rev counter cable that 81 inches long. Not all ideas work though The rear brakes are a mixture of mini moto disks mounted on a home spun hub. With a bit of trimming Kawasaki GPz305 front calipers just fitted inside the wheel. They dont stop you, but you can feel them slowing things down a bit. Almost finished Some additional cooling was needed. And the paint work was sorted This is the end result The trike is due to be brought out of winter hibernation some time this coming week. Hope this answers your questions Tim :D
combatmp29r 27 #5 Posted February 23, 2008 Ian once again your fabricating skills are the dogs bollucks Wait can i say that on here? LOL Seriousely another great job of engineering. The wife wants to take a vacation over there in a couple years to see all the sights that i'm sure you guys are tired of hearing about . I think I'm gonna have to add a day or two so that I can come see you and Mith in person and check out the toys.
Rollerman 290 #6 Posted February 23, 2008 Ian I'm in awe...thats crazy...morphing from a reel mower to a trike! Thanks again for another good post & a great read. ......
Greg B. 1 #7 Posted February 24, 2008 That looks like an unbelievable amount of fun. It looks to be street legal, with the possible exception of needing DOT rear tires, al least here in Alabama. Nice flame job, too. Greg B.
TR_DIGGER 3 #8 Posted February 24, 2008 Ian, That is awsome how it all came together. Make me want to do something like that. I would like just to be able to see your drawing boards. Cant wait to see what you come up with next. Keep Up the Great! work!
Stigian 1,234 #9 Posted February 24, 2008 Cheers for all the cool comments guys I think I'm gonna have to add a day or two so that I can come see you and Mith in person and check out the toys. Your more than welcome Joel, as are all you guys if your ever in my neck of the woods. It looks to be street legal, with the possible exception of needing DOT rear tires, al least here in Alabama. Its not road legal, but wouldn't need too much work to make it so. Fully working rear brakes would be handy, as would a hand brake. The rear tire have "not for highway use" on them, guess they might need changing Oh and im not sure the powers that be would be too happy with rear wheels held on with C-clips That is awsome how it all came together. Thank you sir Make me want to do something like that. Go for it Its a great feeling making something from a pile of parts and scrap metal For me its the challenge of the build that "flicks my switch". i love the problem solving. I would like just to be able to see your drawing boards. I never make plans, more make it up as i go along As for my next non- Wheel Horse project.................. its been started :P
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #10 Posted February 24, 2008 But..... can it still cut grass like this one ? :
combatmp29r 27 #11 Posted February 24, 2008 I bet if he put the reel mower back on it it would leave a better finish to the lawn
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #12 Posted February 24, 2008 Maybe on a golf course....... but not MY yard! I really need to borrow the neighbors lawn roller sometime !
combatmp29r 27 #13 Posted February 24, 2008 Let me guess Terry your lawn incorporates the bloody version of Whack a Mole into lawn mowing right?
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #14 Posted February 24, 2008 Nope -- it just has all those Hippo footprints to deal with!
Stigian 1,234 #15 Posted February 24, 2008 Nice JD trike If i put the gears and original drive pulley back in and on the trike trans i could have a 5 speed forward and reverse PTO that would only work while the trike is moving I could always hang a cutting deck out the back Arnt mole a pain, i escaped them last year but this year they are back :D
Stigian 1,234 #16 Posted February 24, 2008 Hippo's Terry has the mother in law been walking around the garden Did you get "the rise and fall of Reginald Perring" on tv over in the states???
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #17 Posted February 24, 2008 I have yet to meet a critter or a snake that can conquer the 48" deck on the 416 ! I've been know to make ground mouse and mole a few times!

TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #20 Posted February 24, 2008 Hippo's Terry has the mother in law been walking around the garden Did you get "the rise and fall of Reginald Perring" on tv over in the states??? The "Hippo" thing goes way back to a post I answered about mower blades being installed wrong, Ian. I said it looked like a hippo had been rolling alond behind and flattening out the grass......... One thing led to another, and this photo surfaced on here:

Mith 2 #22 Posted February 25, 2008 think I'm gonna have to add a day or two so that I can come see you and Mith in person and check out the toys. You're welcome Joel. There are lots of attractions in my area to keep the wife happy while we talk tractors # Ian, are you putting the power into that trans with the brake shaft on the westwood box on the trike? Is the box holding up OK? Both those builds are pretty dran neat looking!
Stigian 1,234 #23 Posted February 26, 2008 Ian, are you putting the power into that trans with the brake shaft on the westwood box on the trike? Is the box holding up OK? Both those builds are pretty dran neat looking! In reverse order.. Cheers Jim Yes the trans seems to be holding up quite well to the abuse it gets And yes i am putting the power in through the brake shaft... or was <_< I dragged the trike out of its slumber yesterday, put a seat back on it, fixed a slight fuel leak, then jump started it back into life. A few runs round the garden later i thought id give it some welly and drop the clutch in 1st gear. Twang twang crunch went the chain as it stripped a few teeth off the ex-brake disk/sprocket I also noticed one of the rear brake caliper mounts had made a bid for freedom <_< Not too much of a problem as im going to pinch the calipers for another mad project a have on the operating table
