Shear pins for 1991 Wheel Horse (Toro) 44" 2 stage snow thrower

Recommended Posts

What grade are the shear pins (Bolts) on the augur assembly? Toros product support site declares that grade 5 is correct, is the gearbox capable of shearing a grade 5 if it gets locked up? or should I just use grade 2?

I also would rather not have to replace pins constantly in the dead of winter, so if grade 5s are ok, that's what I'll use.

Any other tips or tricks would be appreciated too.

Thanks.

Welcome!

The belt drive acts like a slip clutch too if you encounter a chunk of ice while in use. If the OE bolts have undercuts on the diameter - at the proper locations - then they are designed to protect the gearbox components by breaking at the undercuts. Those features need to be in the auger portion, not the shaft. Pull one and verify.....

Thanks for the quick response,

The bolts in it when I purchased the machine were just standard shanked grade 5, 5/16" - 3" bolts.

Download the manual for it - look to see if the OE pins have the undercuts.

Years ago, my son worked at a local Ma & Pa Hardware Store. A customer came in looking to replace all the shearbolts on his Ariens walk behind SnoThro with Grade 8 bolts & nuts, as he was tired of replacing them. The Customer left with them, after my son warned him about their designed-in function... After the next storm, the same Customer returned - quite upset - because the bolts held and the gearbox internals were now trash. The Store owner reviewed the prior sale, complete with the warning, and told him he got exactly what he specified and paid for..... "Darwin Award Trophy Bolts". :laughing-rofl:
