BPEisenhower 683 #1 Posted October 19 Hello Horse family, cool days and short on sunlight after work but, I finally got the "scrap" Charger 12 Automatic running on its own and got the blade mounted, ready for action. Even with flat, cracked, turf tires, it still pushed millings with ease. Very Impressed! So, since I can't bring myself to use it for parts, my plan is to first of all, get a new ignition switch since the one in it is wired directly to the battery and starter, no solenoid! I need correct key switch part number please! And, since it's a 14HP, not a 12, will the Electric PTO from a 12 HP fit? Definitely stopping by NAPA and grabbing a few 1410 filters and Type F ATF for a few others in the need for service. Right rear hub is loose, I have to get steel stock for new key way OR, put in new seals so both hubs can be welded (dealt with that before). And, of course, new AG tires on rear filled with beet juice will guarantee I can shove snow if we get enough. Lastly, Rust-Oleum is needed, don't care about the orange hue.. I wish Valspar still made the restoration series IH red. I think it's Almond or what used to be Navajo White for the rims..... That's it for the moment and if there's any suggestions, feel free to educate me! 5
rjg854 13,396 #2 Posted Tuesday at 01:42 PM Myself, I'd leave it just like it is. They are only original once and it appears from the picture to be in nice condition considering its age. Buff it out and give it a good wax job and it will be fine. Of course paint the wheels and enjoy the way it is. Make it mechanically perfect that the most important part. Unless you want a trailer queen that you're afraid to put a scratch on. Work it, that's what they were made for. That's my opinion for what it's worth, it's your tractor.
peter lena 10,081 #3 Posted Tuesday at 02:09 PM @BPEisenhower been doing paint recovery for years , like a thorough penetrating oil soak down for days or longer , ideally hot sun really heats up metal and draws in lubrication salvation . do a multi stage , gain on it , think the neatest thing about this way ? once attained , a clean cloth penetrant wipe down , brings it right back , perfect patina . recently did a carb cleaner , test area , clean cloth , no effort at all , paint just looks ]patana perfect , EXPERIMENT WITH A SMALL AREA , , thats how I started , pete

Don't want to be afraid to scratch it but, do like the original work clothes but minus the black stripe down the middle. LoL. Hopefully, I can use it this winter if we get snow! Plan to change fluid and filter this weekend and break out the buffer!

LoL. I understand that, however, I would heat the hub in an oven before welding. That's a last resort unless I can fix key way OR if I have the time, cut the splined end off and orbital weld a new shaft with a solid hub from a few DANA axles laying around. At any rate, I have to finish it so I can get another one done, then another, and get a few more 🤣
rjg854 13,396 #7 Posted Thursday at 01:29 PM A-Z Tractor has replacement hubs if your keyway is bad. That also may be an option.
