953 nut 69,551 #1 Posted Friday at 09:43 PM October 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. Inspired by the Ford Ranchero, which had already been on the market for two years, the El Camino was a combination sedan-pickup truck built on the Impala body, with the same “cat’s eye” taillights and dramatic rear fins. It was, ads trilled, “the most beautiful thing that ever shouldered a load!” “It rides and handles like a convertible,” Chevy said, “yet hauls and hustles like the workingest thing on wheels.” 3 3
squonk 48,155 #2 Posted Friday at 10:09 PM (edited) Looks like you made it out ok Richard! My family was a GM family in the 50' s through the 70's. Grandmother had a 59 Biscayne with the cat eyes and bat wings and then a 60 Impala. Uncle graduated from college with a 57 Belair and traded it for a brand new 65 Impala SS. He later had a 73 El Camino which was based on the Malibu. I was thinking about that car/truck the other day. I took my dog for a walk in my old home town and drove by a shop and lo and behold there's an identical El Camino on a lift! I wonder what became of Waldo's El that drove him nuts? When the 59s came out she refused to give up the 58. she kept it until the 61s came out. 3

c-series don 12,483 #5 Posted 11 hours ago I remember going with my step grandpa in his mid seventies El Camino and wood deck converted boat trailer to pick up my new Work Horse GT-1800 in 1984. 1 1
Beap52 2,509 #6 Posted 3 hours ago Here's mine. I probably posted it's picture before but if a fellow only has one... Bought it new in 1971 for $3,688-still have paperwork. I like to tell folks "Two more payments and this puppy is mine!" Had it restored twenty five or so years ago. Drive it about one thousand miles a year. Just got through replacing the points and condenser. Local auto supply sold me a lifetime warranty set in 2013--good grief the price of points and condensers have went up--$64 if I had to pay for them.
