I have rarely seen starters wear out on these vehicles any faster than they did on ones not equipped with the start/stop system. Batteries do tend to need replaced more often, not because the engine won't start at all, but because it got low enough that the system wouldn't shut the engine down, and now the owner thinks there is some problem. I have yet to see a wiring issue that affected the start/stop system. However my statement seems to be misinterpreted. The auto stop/start systems do not involve adding any components to the vehicle that would not already be there, except the cancel button, and some vehicles (mainly Fords IME) get a small electric pump on the transmission to hold line pressure while the engine shuts down, keeping it in gear. The entire rest of the system is software, or components like starters, batteries, and wires, that would be present without the system. Some of the newest ones have a different belt tensioner and belt, and use the alternator as a starter/generator unit for the start/stop system, and I somewhat suspect that we are going to go back towards those just in general over the next decade or so.
