davem1111 2,363 #2 Posted 5 hours ago https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_Peoples'_Day_(United_States) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peopling_of_the_Americas I don't want to stir things up, but what Columbus "discovered" had already been populated for at least 15,000-20,000 years, and new discoveries may be pushing that back into six figure numbers. Kinda like if I said I discovered the automobile in a Walmart parking lot. What happened to the Indigenous people after Europeans came here is fairly well documented but many have been trying to "whitewash" that history...

And I don't think there should be any confusion whatsoever about it. I also don't think they should be any controversy whatsoever. A LOT of new information comes out every year all across the many fields of science. 30 years ago we thought humans had been in the Americas for 8,000 years. We now know it's been at LEAST 23,000. Likely many more.
SylvanLakeWH 32,532 #7 Posted 2 hours ago Nothing to stir. Columbus Day is a governmental holiday. You are free to celebrate it or not, in any manner you wish or not. That’s what makes this Country unique. And something to be celebrated. Warts and all. Same with all the other days, weeks, months etc. for the myriad of events, causes and remembrances... Perhaps we could all look at things as NOT zero sum comparisons... Just a thought. 1

953 nut 69,345 #11 Posted 11 minutes ago From the beginning of recorded history (and well before) groups of people have overtaken the lands and possessions of others. The "Indigenous" people who lived on Guanahni, the island in the Bahamas where Columbus actually landed on his first transatlantic journey, held slaves. These slaves were the looser in an unknown war where another tribe from another land took over the island. Many Native American tribes including the Maya, Aztecs and others kept prisoners of war as slaves. Columbus made four trips from Europe to The American cotenant landing in the Lesser Antilles, Trinidad, the North coast of South America, and the East Coast of Central America. There is no record of Christopher Columbus ever setting foot in the land now known as the United States. There is also no record of him displacing any inhabitant on the North American Continent. His navigational skills are worthy of recognition considering the lack of sophisticated interments. Do they deserve a federal holiday if you are a government employee I suppose you would think so. Seems to me that the people who erected statues in his honor in a land he didn't actually discover were not wrong in doing so, just a bit uninformed or overzealous, and those who tore them down on in the misguided belief that this would somehow make ammens for the inhumanity that took place over a period of about 300 years. Can't we all just get along and learn from the errors of our predassoras.
