My first starter-generator. Is it loud?

If you remove the guard (for test purpose only) is it still loud??

The belt noise goes away. And I can hear that the majority of the whine is from the pulley side bearing.

That there is a two-fer. ID'd the belt rub and the bad bearing. Win-win.:handgestures-thumbupleft:

Getting the belt guard aligned is a tricky proposition. There's very little clearance overall so a gain at one spot creates a tight spot somewhere else.

Ended up bolting down the guard and running the engine, then tapping around with small rubber mallet until I found the sweet spot where the noises disappeared.

Sometimes you just gotta go with what works. :confusion-shrug:

Update - so the belt guard gradually went back to its rubbing and belt slapping.

The only way I could get the proper clearance was to remove the front bracket bolt. Seems great now, except the front bracket is about an 1/4" above the hole it bolts into.

I tried bending it but that wasn't working out. The only solution I can think of is to separate the spot welds and relocate the bracket.

Anyone here ever experienced this anomoly?

Welcome to my world.

Any chance you got the wrong belt guard? There was one with three lines on it and one plain and they are definitely different. Apparently 7 & 8 HP.  One is larger on the SG pulley end for a larger pulley and more clearance overall. I think its the one with the lines. Looks like you have the plain one.

We was just yakin about this i was having a fit trying to get one to quit rattlin. Here I had the wrong one.

For the K161 alone there are 3 variants, depending on the spec number. My spec calls for variant 77 - part# 231835.

Good grief!

Now that I've eliminated the hot spots and the belt slap. I think I'll go with the plan to separate the spot welds and relocate the bracket.
