Won't go into gear.

My 72 Raider 8-10 was shifting harder and harder and now only finds reverse. I don't know much about these gear boxes. Not much about transmissions in general. Where do I start? Gear oil is fresh 80/90. Shifter? Forks? Anything  would be useful. Thanks

Does it go cleanly into all the gears with the engine off? If so, your problem most likely stems from the drive belt not being stopped with the clutch pedal fully depressed. 

Easy enough to see (at least on a C series) - while off the tractor, start it in neutral, depressing the clutch fully by hand. Look across the battery area to find the drive belt - it should be stopped.

If not, try adjusting the pedal back towards you for more throw. The belt guard MUST be installed, and correctly, for proper belt control. Most guards have tabs inside to aid in stopping the belt....

My 953 has the same problem. It almost always wants to grind gears when trying to go into gear from neutral. I never shift while in motion. It goes into gear cleanly with the engine off.

No problem with belt stoppage on my 310-8.       It locks the belt without the belt guard.    The lock could be added to older tractors.

If you have it in gear and go to shift, The brake usually stops all of the shafts so you can shift cleanly. Say Reverse to 2nd. If it's in neutral or you pause in neutral during your shift, the trans shafts "disengage" and the input shaft is free to turn with the belt. 

 

I have a similar issue with my Power King. They are notorious for grinding gears from neutral. I partially solved it by using heavier grease in the trans to slow the free wheeling shafts down.
