Racinbob 13,108 #1 Posted yesterday at 08:48 AM (edited) I don't need the generator and I certainly don't need another project but the price was certainly right, free. It's dirty from sitting but clearly there's not many hours on it. It was locked up tight and I couldn't be sure if it was the engine or generator head so I opened things up. Once I got this far I found that it would rotate just shy of one turn before stopping solidly. It was definitely in the engine. I kept going and found this. Apparently the spring retainer left home and the valve dropped into the cylinder. It completely punctured the head and was jammed tight. The head is toast. The piston wasn't hurt and I think the pushrods are fine but I'll check them better today. I first assumed that a new head would end this project and I'd just salvage the power head but I found a used head complete with the valves, springs and rockers for 40 some bucks so now I'm pondering. It's not worth putting a lot into it, especially for me since I don't need it, but I would a reasonable amount. I figure I'll scrounge up a service manual. I didn't see one here for the overhead valve models What would you guys do? This unit will clean up to near new condition and could be a nice little generator. wallfish 20,508 #2 Posted yesterday at 09:43 AM Fix it up and sell it at a very reasonable price to someone that needs it. 4
Racinbob 13,108 #3 Posted yesterday at 10:19 AM That could be an option if I get it right. I'm looking for opinions from the engine gurus as to what I should do while I have it open considering the type of failure.
ri702bill 12,799 #4 Posted yesterday at 10:54 AM You will probably want to remove the flywheel & check the key - the sudden stop of rotating parts - at speed - most likely caused an issue with the key, and perhaps the connecting rod.

I was hoping not to pull the flywheel. I don't have the right puller. There's no tapped holes in the face of it. I have a good view of the key and keyway. It looks unharmed. As far as the rod If feels great when I rotate it and I don't feel or hear anything at the bottom or top of the stroke. Good enough check?
Ed Kennell 46,975 #6 Posted yesterday at 12:00 PM I had a battery start Onan powered genset. When the Onan died, I added a drive pulley and did some replumbing. Now I park it in front of a WH and drive it off the PTO. The Onan is an air compressor while the generator has 110V AC and 12VDC outputs. This is what happens when you get cabin fever in the winter. 2 5

That's awesome. I could see something like that as being another option. A small transportable generator would be handy out in the woods.

Racinbob 13,108 #13 Posted 20 hours ago Geez! The flywheel came off so easily it almost scared me. The key is beat a little. I don't know if it would have affected things but definitely needs replacing. Shaft keyway is still pristine.

Racinbob 13,108 #16 Posted 16 hours ago Are the aftermarket carbs for these little Teckys as iffy as the ones for Kohlers? I know there must be a pound of gunk in this one so I want to rebuild or replace it.

I’ve had one for HH60 and one for HH100--good and so-so, respectively.

The key is definitely a fuzz off. I'm thinking that slight bit of movement let the flywheel come off easily. The crank is fine but I see what you're seeing there. I just went out to double check but it's just the camera angle.

oldlineman 1,800 #21 Posted 21 minutes ago (edited) I have one like that only 3,200 watt, that was my fathers. I replaced the carb, not sure where I got it but it works well. You would be better served by cleaning the old one if you have the cleaning equipment, witch I do not have. I would also be concerned about having a bent rod with that sudden stop of the crank.
