Tecumseh OHH60 on Generac

I don't need the generator and I certainly don't need another project but the price was certainly right, free. It's dirty from sitting but clearly there's not many hours on it.

It was locked up tight and I couldn't be sure if it was the engine or generator head so I opened things up. Once I got this far I found that it would rotate just shy of one turn before stopping solidly. It was definitely in the engine.

Apparently the spring retainer left home and the valve dropped into the cylinder. It completely punctured the head and was jammed tight. The head is toast. The piston wasn't hurt and I think the pushrods are fine but I'll check them better today. I first assumed that a new head would end this project and I'd just salvage the power head but I found a used head complete with the valves, springs and rockers for 40 some bucks so now I'm pondering. It's not worth putting a lot into it, especially for me since I don't need it, but I would a reasonable amount. 

I figure I'll scrounge up a service manual. I didn't see one here for the overhead valve models 

 

What would you guys do? This unit will clean up to near new condition and could be a nice little generator.

Fix it up and sell it at a very reasonable price to someone that needs it.

That could be an option if I get it right. I'm looking for opinions from the engine gurus as to what I should do while I have it open considering the type of failure.

You will probably want to remove the flywheel & check the key - the sudden stop of rotating parts - at speed - most likely caused an issue with the key, and perhaps the connecting rod.

I was hoping not to pull the flywheel. I don't have the right puller. There's no tapped holes in the face of it. I have a good view of the key and keyway. It looks unharmed. As far as the rod If feels great when I rotate it and I don't feel or hear anything at the bottom or top of the stroke. Good enough check?

I had a battery start Onan powered genset.  When the Onan died, I added a drive pulley and did some replumbing.      Now I park it in front of a WH and drive it off the PTO.

The  Onan is an air compressor while the generator has 110V AC and 12VDC outputs.

This is what happens when you get cabin fever in the winter.

That's awesome. I could see something like that as being another option. A small transportable generator would be handy out in the woods.
