WHX?? 57,702 #1 Posted 12 hours ago (edited) This may be better posted in other brands since I an working on a customer's Ariens GT-20. if so mods can move it. Magnum 20 in this one and a rat's mess of the wiring. Haven't really got into it yet but wiring diagrams show this relay in the magneto ground to kill circuit. It's not listed in the parts manual either with no part id number. . I have no idea what's it for but when I get into the re-wiring it's probably gonna go if it is there. Same with all the safety switches they been hacked up so bad. Should be just a common magneto ground to kill through the switch right? I will put this in other brands you guys may want more pics. Did I mention the wiring? It's really bad. Edited 11 hours ago by WHX?? 1
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 12,438 #2 Posted 12 hours ago The kill relay is necessary because the ignition switch has an "I" terminal intended for battery style ignition. The M-Series have magneto ignition so the battery style of ignition switch is necessary to control the magneto ignition by the use of a relay. Wheel Horse/Toro also use this configuation. The relay illustration is poor. When the relay coil is energized the relay contacts are open. When the relay coil is not energized the ignition wire is grounded. 5

I might have added this is not the original motor but it appears the original motor was magneto too per the wiring diagram. The switch is probably not original either then the way this wiring was hacked on. Note that the I term on the switch has two fuses running right from the battery. Switch will most definitely replaced with one we use on horses for magnetos. Right now the kill switch is a hacked on grounding toggle switch. Bill D 3,079 #12 Posted 1 hour ago Personally, any time I rewire a tractor I like to wire it for a powered ignition. This give the most options for engine swaps. Adding a kill relay in place of a coil is very easy. Also, if a newer motor is installed power may need to be supplied to the solenoid on the carb. I can keep just one 103990 ignition switch in stock this way. I based my harness builds off an early 80's C-165 that I fixed for another member. Very basic wiring with what I consider the essential safety switches.
953 nut 68,381 #13 Posted 30 minutes ago Converting from battery ignition to magneto is very straight forward but going from magneto to battery ignition and having the safety switches work is much more involved. I'm sure you have seen this before but here it is again.
