1054 Hydraulic Pump Return Spring

Recommended Posts

1054 Project

For some time now I have needed to manually move the hydraulic lift lever back to neutral. I know there are rebuild kits available. So now that I have the unit on the bench (for a different issue) would you recommend diving into the pump? Is it a complicated process? Should I leave well-enough-alone?988904407_WheelHorse1054withModelA4CCWHHydraulicPump02.PNG.ff7f3fc3740fe62dfab59d848634e4aa.PNG

It is not a big deal to change. I believe Lowell has the Spring & gaskets...

Change it sooner than later. If it is one of the horse-shoe shaped springs and it broke the remaining piece will dig into the pump head with use, egging out the hole, gouging the surface, and ultimately making it unable to retain a new spring.

Advise when pulling the pump apart.

1 - The cylinder "#16 in the diagram" has a slight taper to it and has to slide in to be removed.

2 - If you need to remove the belt pulley, DO NOT tap on the shaft with a hammer. You WILL damage the pump gears.

If you note these two things, a rebuild is pretty easy.

@1054 Project  opportunity ?  regularly see looking for a  cure , but no thought  for  related  , lever / linkage  connections . ENHANCE THAT  SET UP , penetrating oil  , will start a rust run out  , then  like red aerosol grease ,  or super lube , hydraulic oil , read  specs , also  use it all my cabling  , set ups . just an idea , pete

:text-yeahthat:If the spring broke in pieces you don't want those floating around in there and if the handle just flops or left into lift or lower it will pop the relief spring which can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the pump.

OK...I definitely have the 953 style (horseshoe shaped spring) pump on my 1054. Although there is some gouging of the head I am more concerned about the second "mystery" hole on one side of the spool valve.

This is the exact type of damage I was referring to.

The "mystery hole" looks like the spring broke some time ago, the owner at the time was unable to remove the broken section of spring, and and just made a new hole.

I have never not had the broken piece be so stuck in the hole that it required some effort to extract, to the point that I am totally unconcerned about that possibility.
