crackerjohn 4 #1 Posted 20 hours ago Hi folks, new member and have a question. I just acquired a 520h and My ignition is shot, actually not there I am just trying to get it going to see what I have. So what I have done is run a switched wire from positive side of battery to positive on coil then I ran a switched wire from positive side of battery to solenoid. I have lots of spark and it turns over great but won' start. What am I missing? Go easy on the new guy..LOL

crackerjohn 4 #5 Posted 19 hours ago Yes lots of compression . So I have compression, fuel and spark. I am wondering if I have to jump any wires in the ignition plug. I didn't want to do that until I got some feedback here.
8ntruck 9,135 #6 Posted 18 hours ago Is the spark at the correct time?

crackerjohn 4 #9 Posted 17 hours ago I am old school and don't have one of those pocket phones to take pictures and there is no reception where I live. I know there is lots of spark because I hooked up one of those spark testers between the plug and plug wire and it was firing really good.
crackerjohn 4 #10 Posted 8 hours ago Well I got it going this AM. I gave it a squirt of starting fluid ( which I don't like to use ) and it fired right up and it runs really good. Now all I have to do is figure out why it is not charging, 12.63v. Thanks for all the replies.

I will go ahead and suggest replacing fuel pump with an electric one. My 520H would take forever to fire if it set any length of time, and the factory pump would squirt fuel across shop so must have been draining back. Here is a pic of mine so to give you an idea where and what kind I'm using. I can now turn key on let fuel pump run a sec or two and will fire right up. Your sanity and starter will thank you.. 1
Handy Don 17,095 #13 Posted 5 hours ago (edited) WH voltage reguators need solid grounding to work properly. The Onan engine’s voltage regulator is attached to the cooling air shroud. Make sure the body of the regulator has clean electrical contact with the shroud and that the shroud has clean electrical contact with the engine block. For giggles, make sure the battery negative to engine block cable is making solid electrical contact at both ends. If you have an accurate voltmeter (i.e. the tractor stock meters are “approximate”) measure the AC voltage between the two outer pins of the voltage regulator while the engine is running at wide open throttle (WOT). It should be ~40 volts. Edited 5 hours ago by Handy Don
lynnmor 8,953 #14 Posted 5 hours ago Download the Onan manuals here they will have the procedures for troubleshooting and maintenance.
8ntruck 9,135 #15 Posted 4 hours ago I use a shot of carb cleaner into the carb as a starting aid. Not near as violent as starting fluid.
