tntatro 181 #1 Posted 3 hours ago Hello, I have a Wheel Horse that is overcharging the battery. It has a K241. I tried running a ground wire directly from the voltage regulator to the battery with no change. The ac voltage is 36v. When first starting, the DC voltage is around 14.6v but will go way up above 15.5v the longer it runs. It had an aftermarket voltage regulator that I replaced with another aftermarket a while back. Now the new one I just put in still overcharges the same way. I tried one of those smaller flat regulators and it is over 14.5v at startup, full throttle. It has a new battery, key switch and I rewired all the wires that go to the key switch and replaced the amp meter with an hour meter. I think it's been overcharging for a while because I had to replace a battery that didn't seem to last as long as it should and a key switch and the plastic harness to the voltage regulator was melted. Any suggestions on what to do next? Thanks, Tim
rmaynard 17,480 #2 Posted 1 hour ago (edited) I had the same problem, but my output was running at around 20vdc. I solved the problem by cleaning the area of the aluminum heat sink of the regulator and where it mounted to the frame. I don't know why that worked better than a direct wire to battery ground. However, if neither grounding suggestions work, replace the entire regulator with a known-good one from a donor tractor.
