953 nut 67,869 #1 Posted 8 hours ago August 16, 1954, a new magazine dedicated to covering sports appears on American newsstands. Announcing itself with a striking cover photo of Milwaukee Braves third baseman Eddie Mathews, his swinging bat a blur against the dramatic backdrop of a crowded Milwaukee County Stadium, Sports Illustrated is considered a joke by some at its publisher and will not make money for most of its first decade. Eventually, however, it will become the undisputed leader in American sports media, the sporting magazine of record and one of the most recognizable media brands in the world. 1 4
Ed Kennell 46,724 #2 Posted 7 hours ago My Sports Illustrated story. Back in the '70s I was treasurer for Troop 35 BSA. I organized a monthly paper drive that totally financed our troop for years. I got a call asking if I could take magazines. The answer was no because my buyer (Schmidt & Ault Paper Co.) could not process waxy paper. I asked what magazines did he have. He had every issue of Sports Illustrated with every year wrapped in brown paper and tied. My son still has the magazines and continued to complete the collection today. There was one issue missing that he was able to find so the collection is 100% complete.
