Hmmm. Now curious. Maybe a solenoid that mimics the clutch switch until the engine is running?

Yep. Internally it overrides the clutch switch (i.e. prevents grounding the magneto) to allow the engine to start.

Once sufficient voltage from the magneto is reached, the override ends which would seem to want to shut down the engine.

There must be something else in play that lets the engine keep running once started, since otherwise releasing the clutch would shut it down!
