Broken shifter

The 1/4”-20 dog set screw that holds the shifter in place in the transmission, on my 312-8, broke. I can’t get the screw out of the donut, I’ve tried a screw extraction kit but just can’t get it to grab and remove the screw. Any recommendations on other things to try? Or does anyone have a shifter they’d be interested in selling?

The set screw that hold the shifter usually stays in the collar at the top of the transmission.  It is not threaded into the shifter, it just pokes into a hole in the shifter.

 

There is another set screw that holds the donut onto the shifter you should not have to remove it.

Are you saying the tip of the dog point broke off and is in the donut? Very unusual if so and even then should be fairly loose in it.

Ah, the Elephant in the room..... where did the broken tip of the full dog point set screw that holds the donut actually go to?? Not into the Unidrive I hope...You have to find it.

The set screw broke at this point. The right side is in the donut of the shifter, stuck in place. If that doesn’t make sense I will send a close up tonight of what it looks like currently. The other half is still in place in the transmission where it’s meant to screw in. So I can account for both parts, and don’t have concern that it fell into the transmission.

The last shifter I took out done the same thing. I got lucky and was able to get it out though funny thing was it wasnt even that tight in trans and still don't know why it broke off unless it was just about rusted in 2. Not much room to work with without splitting trans from frame, only way I know you could get to it if it's being a booger to get out.

Sometimes - you can get lucky using a left handed 3/16" drill bit and light pressure ... sometimes.

Have coaxed a few out. Now that the nut is off the screw can be tapped in to loosen it up. The nut has been pulling the screw out until it broke. A sharp awl will usually turn it out if the screw is loose.

Ok I had the same thing happen but got lucky and the piece backed out. Oil kept it free and a awl worked. I can talk smart tho the tunnel was off and much easier to get at. Any way you can get in there with say a Dremel  and cut a slot in for a small screwdriver?

They break right where the socket ends. A weak point.

This has worked for me on several projects. Soak it with Kroil for a few days first.

One suggestion buy the longer dog point set screws on McMaster Carr !  I have had four or five issues with these shifter screws over the years.  I had issues on rjs, square hoods and toro models.    I usually buy several at a tome and keep to replace on my tractors.

I was able to get it removed with the 3/16 bit and some pressure. Then replacing the screw was easy and it’s back driving again. Thanks for everyone’s help
