Bull 38 #1 Posted 22 hours ago Hello All, I have pulled the cylinder heads on my KT17 series 2 motor and came up with following stamped numbers: Pistons: 52058-25 Connecting Rod:52 059 06. I don't see these part numbers in the Kohler manual and wanted to see if they were standard or oversized. Regards, Bob

Bull 38 #4 Posted 16 hours ago Hello, I have the Kohler part numbers from their parts manual but was wondering what the numbers on my motor indicated. The engine spec # is 24350 and model # KT17QS. Thanks, Bob
pfrederi 20,867 #5 Posted 16 hours ago You bring up an interesting question. Kohler part numbers are 7 digits plus a suffix. Which you show but I can't find a match. Looking at some other Kohler engine parts left over from overhauls the numbers cast in the connecting rod do not match the part# listed in manuals... Usually over pistons are stamped .010 etc standard piston may be stamped STD or not marked at all. I think you are going to have to measure...I seriously doubt your engine has been overhauled and if yours isn't marked probably is std. If you are going to do an overhaul research what parts are available and how much they will cost you some things are getting harder to find. i did overhaul an M-18 a few years ago some parts were hard to find or expensive and of course machine shop work is expensive as everything is times 2. Bull 38 #6 Posted 14 hours ago Hello, I want to do a partial overhaul and realize that going up ring sizes incurs connecting rod changeouts and crank modifications. I am looking at cleaning the heads, valves, and flex-hone the cylinders for cross hatch. Then would like to clean pistons and add new rings. I have measured the cylinders as best I could and am looking at something close to 3.125". I will try the feeler gauge option that I found on this site. I really don't want to attempt a complete overhaul. I was just trying to see if those part numbers indicated a standard set of rings, pistons, and rods. I have owned the machine for about 5 years with supposed low hours (450) and put on another 100 hours on it. The part numbers on the piston and connecting rods confused me when comparing those numbers to my manual. I want to get the tractor back to work so am also looking at other options if this partial overhaul is not feasible. egards, Bob
pfrederi 20,867 #7 Posted 12 hours ago Out of curiosity I started looking at overhaul kits things have gone up....If you want Pistons, rings and rods you are just under $400 add valves and valve guides $500+ Then the machine shop....I have 3 KT 17s and I love them...but no overhauls in their future... One of mine came from a John Deere 317 with over 2000 hours. She smokes on start up for bit but it clears up and she still works.... With the hours you think you have she has a lot of life left. Is there something that makes you think she need work??
Bull 38 #8 Posted 12 hours ago She stopped running rather quickly. I did a compression check and leak down test. Both came in with low numbers and that's what led me down this path. It's interesting that I saw a set of standard pistons and connecting rods on Marketplace. The rods have the same number on them as mine.
adsm08 4,780 #9 Posted 12 hours ago I am not sure about small engines, but in general I have found it to be exceedingly rare to have the actual part numbers stamped or cast into the part. They are usually stamping numbers that reference the die or mold used to make the part, or an engineering number that can be converted into a part number with the correct reference material.

Running okay then fairly quickly having an issue more likely valves than rings... Given your hours and no markings on the top of the piston I am confident you are STD. Bull 38 #11 Posted 2 hours ago The leak down test indicated rings on both cylinders. I am going to proceed with the partial rebuild and let you know how it works out. Thanks for your help. Regards, Bull
