JOEPOE1977 1 #1 Posted July 21 Again any help from all you professional people out there would be appreciated. Again I have a 1990 310-8 with a 42 inch recycler deck that is burning up belts. I am sending you a picture of the PTO. I am not really good at this so please be patient. I will answer all emails. Thank you for all the help. Are the bearings good? I tried to get pictures in the sun. I hope this helps. Thank you to all.
JoeM 10,267 #2 Posted July 21 Looks good, the only time that bearing spins is when the belt is disengaged.
pfrederi 21,150 #3 Posted July 21 (edited) What does the friction disk (the plate the thing you posted pushes against) look like? Burned belts usual mean drag in teh deck or the mule drive Edited July 21 by pfrederi
JOEPOE1977 1 #4 Posted July 21 I hope this is a good picture of it.

squonk 48,119 #7 Posted July 21 What about the outer bearing on the PTO. They go bad quite often. Napa # PP204RR6
Ed Kennell 47,318 #8 Posted July 21 Good to see you have figured out how to post pictures and comments on your existing post. As stated above, the PTO bearing is not involved when the PTO is engaged. Are you sure you have the correct size belt? If the belt is too narrow it will bottom out in the pulleys and not grip the sides of the VEE as designed. Can you post a picture of the belt installed and how it fits in the PTO and deck pulleys?
sqrlgtr 3,929 #9 Posted July 21 (edited) might just be the way it looks in pic but are those hot spots on clutch plate face? Edited July 21 by sqrlgtr
8ntruck 9,296 #10 Posted July 21 How thick is the clutch lining on the plate? If is is around 3/32" to 1/8", you are good. 1/16" to 3/32", you are getting iffy. I'm assuming that the belt that is wearing is the one that comes off of the engine and drrives the deck. Other than maybe a severly worn pulley groove, the PTO clutch normally does not cause wear on the drive belt. Do all 3 spindles in the deck spin freely? Does the tensioning puelly on the belt spin freely? Do both pulleys in the mule drive spin freely? I was mowing one day and started smelling hot rubber. Turned out that i had a stick jammed in the mule drive that locked up one pulley. to the forum. You have found probably the best forum for Wheel Horse advice. Taken as a group, I believe that the regulars here have broken and fixed just about everything on a Wheel Horse that can be broken and fixed.

oldlineman 1,809 #13 Posted July 22 just a side note don't overdo the grease on that cage bearing, it will bleed out onto you clutch plate and you will have another problem, slipping clutch plate.
peter lena 10,065 #14 Posted July 22 @JOEPOE1977 that cage bearing needs a thorough wipe / and flush out , first , then a very light coating of a POLYUREA RATED , lubricant , ? mininises sling off , also 550 deg flash point, so it does not, dry out , into a drag point . lucas xtra hd , green chassis grease , easily meets those specs . my pto cone easily spins by hand , when disengaged , also replace the outer bearing napa pp204rr6, the burn spots on the disc , are showing / telling you what's hanging up , collective / combined rotational drag , is typically lubrication failure , that also shows up in belt edge wear . every stage of that , needs , functional detailing , not as difficult as it sounds , pete

JOEPOE1977 1 #16 Posted July 22 You are talking about the outside bearing of the PTO. Right? Is this the grease that you are talking about? I also check the disk attached to the engine, it is 1/4 inch thick. I check the mule drive the inside pulley or flat pulley does NOT spin as freely as the outside or V pulley. I was informed this is also a good grease. What ever you recommend I will purchase.
JOEPOE1977 1 #17 Posted July 22 I was intending to just replace all the spindles and the pullys on the deck. Good choice? I am using a Gates 6997 belt. I never had a problem until this recently.

JOEPOE1977 1 #19 Posted July 22 Here is the belt and picture of it on the PTO. Again thank you for all the help.
peter lena 10,065 #20 Posted July 22 @JOEPOE1977 yes that is the grease , also have that in all my cleaned out spindle bearings and mule drive bearings . personally never trust any bearing lube , always based on the cheapest available , those side grease shields easily pop off with a small flat screwdriver or small putty knife , pop them both off , wipe out and carb cleaner flush , ensuring removal of all related , trouble . repack with lucas green , reinstall seals , on spindle bearings , leave inner seals out , so related grease fitting can be used . never had any whyining noise or related bearing failures , in years of usage , 3 tractors also did this to my , units , this is a GOLD MINE AREA , FOR FUNCTIONAL INPROVEMENT . lever action is , solid / smooth / slick and no related , issues . years in use , no failures or issues . never burned out a clutch disc , every movement hand off , is seamless , pete
JOEPOE1977 1 #21 Posted July 22 What tools to pull this PTO apart?
John c 223 #22 Posted July 23 a snapring pliers and something like a 3/8 socket extension to drive the bearing out with. The pully/belt fit looks good to me. How old was the belt that just snapped ? What kinda shape was it in, may have just the end of line for that belt. Have you replaced the belt and ran it with a new belt yet ? If so does the problem persist ? Your clutch looks servicable, I'd say check and recheck everything that spins relating to the mower deck, if something is bound up somehow, that'd pop a belt and you'd smell it
