Transmission fill question

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the very basic question but I just drained the transmission on the C160. Should I fill from the top or with the small fill plug on the bottom left side? Also, if I do the kerosene flush should I add a full 2 quarts of kerosene before I briefly run it through the gears? Thanks!!

Plug in question. Seems straight forward but it just doesn’t look like the enough can be added utilizing this lower plug.

WHX??

Just fill to the top of the plug it will be enough. 80/90 weight.

No need to flush unless what comes out is milky. Take a pic of what comes out and we'll tell you if it needs flushing.

Many of us like to jack the front up as high as safely possible. Another cup or so will come out "over the hump".

If easily accessable, remove the shifter & boot and fill thru the hole on top. A good excuse to see if the boot needs to be replaced.

That angled fill on the side is a carryover from the old 4 speed design that held 1-1/2 quarts.. You need to fill higher than that. Two quarts.

As mentioned above - look at what comes out... not uncommon to see a milky mix of oil & water. Extreme cases - loose bearing needles, chips of gear teeth...:o

Going by factory spec that's challenging for a 6 or 8 speed.

That side fill will barely allow 1.5 qts. The fill quantity is 2 qts.

Can the tractor be lifted from the left side >>safely<< enough to get the full amount in?

I thought all C160's had a dip stick but I may be wrong, if so, just go by marks on dip stick and fill through the dip stick hole. If no dip stick, I always try and fill through the shifter hole. If you can get at least 1 1/2 quart's in through the side plug, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have had WH's that have had little to no oil or full of water that PO's have run like that for years :angry-banghead:.

@Fj40z  always use , hi mileage atf  fluid  on my trans flushes , local , cul de sac  nearby , use every gear / range , picture that  fluid  cleaning / showering  fluid , put some miles / time on it , flushing it down to  drainage area , also  raise front end to enhance drainage , , like a new shift boot . lightly  greased on the  underside ? to enhance sliding over  irregularities  on top of trans , like a big tie wrap  on shifter stick , to hold it in best  staying place . regularly check over  basics  after any usage , engine oil / condition  , trans check , top off tank , add  sta bil  fuel storage , fuel filters always clean clear  , no fuel hose break down . regular for  me , no issues , pete
