My niece and sister-in-law were outside when this little guy returned, he didn't seem at all interested in them.

Very cool!

We've had a few here over the years. Beautiful animals.

At a respectful distance or from within a safe space!

My closest look was from inside a (canvas walled) pop-up camper while mom & her cubs tore open an empty cooler looking for a meal.

In Maine the wild bears are closely monitored by the Game Wardens. Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

If ANY sign of a problem with humans arrises the animal is quickly relocated.

We've been within a few dozen yards of a mother with cubs. That was close enough.

We have followed a large male into the forest but never found it.

While doing a quote visit at an empty house in the middle of nowhere, I walked around the back corner of the garage and BAM !!!, mother and 2 cubs about 30-40 ft away. She turned and dropped her head and looked at me so I puckered real tight and bit a hole in my pants as a defense mechanism. Luckily she was just as startled as I was so she turned away and took off into the woods with the 2 cubs. It took me quite a while to get rid of the adrenaline shakes because she could've easily been on me before I got 3 steps.

We've chased away black bears just by waving our arms and making noise but a mamma and her cubs that close could've been a disaster.

This clip was on the net news feed today

We have a growing bear population here in Missouri and even have a limited hunting of them.

A couple of years ago my brother-in-law and I were camping and hiking a trail in a state park  when we came across a sign warning sign about bears.   We decided that if the state had only one sign, it was wise of them to post in in the middle of the length of the trail.  I looked down and he had worn a clunky pair of work boots and I had running shoes.  If needed, I felt pretty safe that I could keep ahead of Larry.

You don't need to be faster than the hunter. You need to be faster than the slowest prey.

We spent a fair amount of time in bear country with the kids growing up... Mrs Sylvan is not a fan of bears... so of course, whenever we went on a hike I would always review the 2 simple rules with the kids:

1. Open tuna fish can is in Mom's pack correct?

2. Don't need to outrun the bear, just Mom.

Kids thought it was hilarious... Mom was never amused... :hide:

Guess that would be me since I have to use a walker since the stroke three years ago.         :hide:

Maybe you need to learn how to weaponize your walker

Where is “Q” when you need him? :D

And didn’t the assassin in “The Day of the Jackal” mask his rifle as a crutch?
