Excessive AC Voltage at regulator/rectifier?

Recommended Posts

cjb398

I've got a 416-H with the Onan engine. The battery is not charging. I measure about 12.45 at the battery whether it is running or not. I get the same voltage at the regulator output with the engine at full throttle, so it is not charging the battery. I've cleaned and tested the connections and run through the diagnostics as explained in the topic below. It appears that my voltage regulator is not working. I noticed, however, that my AC voltage across the regulator terminals measures about 52 volts AC. Is this normal and will this cause the rectifier to go bad? And why would it be so high? I haven't found any mention of anything like this in the forums.

You may have a bad - corroded - ground where the rectifier housing meets the sheet metal. Remove the rectifier, clean the housing and the bolts. Reassemble & check.

It is a common issue that shows up over a long time of use.

Many of us add a ground cable from the rectifier bolt to a nearby point on the engine or chassis.

@ri702bill totally agree on the added ground cable set up , like a clean base on  every  surface , dielectric  grease , on  bolt base / threading , pete

I just went down a very similar path, even though I'd thought the live terminals were sufficiently clean and connected I ended up with a dremel bit and solder for the live parts and a supplemental conductor straight to battery ground.

Thanks all for the input. I have checked the ground with a jumper from the rectifier to the negative battery post. No change. I have a new rectifier on order.

How do I determine which of these apply to my engine? I have a 1993 416-H with the Onan 16hp engine. Thanks.

Here’s a link to the service manual. Lotsa good info!

You should have the 20 amp system and suspect the D in your spec number follows B and C

Your engine numbers should be P216G-I/10976D

The 1997 models used spec G
