Fordiesel69 272 #1 Posted 5 hours ago I was not operating it, but in the middle of a mow it shut off like someone turned the key. Once we towed it back, it just starts and within 2 sec dies. If I hold the key in the start position, magically it still runs. Seat switch is good as I have parking brake fully set. I jumped the switch just to be sure. Oil level is at F. Not sure how to check further.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 12,300 #2 Posted 5 hours ago I don't know if all model years are the same or not. Will guess at this one. Download the file and in it is a diagram for just the ignition. Easy to follow.

JoeM 10,065 #4 Posted 1 hour ago Make sure your red wire is hooked up the carb anti backfire solenoid and you can hear an audible click when turning it to the run position.

I’d begin by voltage checking the wiring starting at the “I” (ignition) terminal on the switch. It should have 12v when the key is in Run or Start positions--and be sure to wiggle the key while it’s in the Run position to see if that affects anything! I’d also carry the voltmeter around and once it stalls out, immediately (without touching ANYTHING ELSE) check for voltage at the “+” terminal on the coil. No voltage there means no spark and gives you a starting place to find out why! Does the xi series have a powered ignition? I thought those had a magneto?

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 12,300 #7 Posted 41 minutes ago They use a battery style ignition switch to power a kill relay to control the magneto ignition.

Elegant, especially since it permitted combining other safety switches in that circuit.
953 nut 66,940 #9 Posted 8 minutes ago Your charging system has a diode that feeds the fuel shut-off solenoid while the engine is running. The solenoid is fed directly from the key switch in the start position. Take a look at the VIOLET colored wired from the charging system to the fuel solenoid and its diode. That system has been used by Wheel Horse for years, primarily on Briggs powered B & C series tractors. Here is a thread I did a few years ago that shows how simple it is.
