barnsworth 1 #1 Posted 23 hours ago Hello everyone. New/Old member. Lost my account so a new one I hope I can remember this one! I have a 1973 "no name" model, 8 hp 4 speed. The rear axle seal has been leaking and finally blew all the way out and was riding around the axle itself. Not ideal. I pulled the hub which didn't go well but that's beside the point. Pulled what was left of the old seal out/off and when I looked inside where the seal sits, I saw what was in the image. There is some kind of edge in there that the seal sits on? Or is that part of the old seal? I tried to find the correct exploded view for this particular tractor, and I know it's here someplace but for the life of me I can't find it. It is less that the in and out movement if that is of any help. If that is the case I'm up the creek so to speak. That is well beyond my mechanical abilities. ri702bill 12,296 #9 Posted 20 hours ago As Paul stated, there should only be in & out movement, none allowable for either up & down or side to side..... Just replacing the seal with a bad bearing behind it is a waste of effort & money.... If the bearing is shot, the axle may be roughed up & need to be replaced. IF any of the needles in any bearings got loose inside, gear damage can result. Only way to know is to pull it apart..... To replace the bearing, the Unidrive needs to come apart. Or.... swap it with another good 4 speed. There are some excellent instructional documents in the Transmissions section that cover the teardown. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I had a diff. bolt break several years ago in my 1989 414-8 and having never had the tranny apart but owning Wheel Horse tractors for over 50 years I completed the tear down and repair. while apart installed all new bearings and seals, with the help of many more knowledgeable members hear.
