Evening,

While researching and learning about Kohler engines, I came across this, unaware that Kohler still made small engines.
anyone have experience with this one or similar modern Kohler engines? How do they compare say to those harbor freight predators and or The genuine Honda 200s those are based off of?

Just stick with your  K181  The shaft on your linked engine is to small and too short.  I know you are trying to learn but stay focused on what you have.

Agreed. Plus the K181 has ball bearings at both ends of the crank. No comparison whatsoever.

Neither the newer Kohler or the Predator compare the the one you have, get it running and you'll be better off, "Just Do It".

What’s makes the original so much better? American made.. thicker block? Better components?

Cast Iron Block   real steel camshaft gears  ball bearings on the crankshaft

Edit:  Check back in 65 years see how many of the predators are still running:P

Thank you for telling me what’s inside that makes it better instead of just it’s a vintage Kohler, use it fix it- since this being a Wheelhorse forum.
is this Carrol stream engine just another same engine different name then predator ect?

Pretty much any generic OHV engine sold in the last two decades is a clone of the Honda GX series engine.  If you are dead set on replacing any engine and don't care about it being original, just go to Harbor Freight, they're all pretty much the same basic design with similar power output.  I have used a few of the clone engines over the years but only on equipment that I couldn't find an original style engine or the cost of rebuilding was too much; it was hard to beat the $99 price tag years ago to replace an engine on a seldom used rototiller.

If you can keep the original Kohler engine going, that's what I'd aim for, but I understand that everyone and every situation has its limitations.  There is a lot of knowledge here on this forum and willingness to talk you through.

That’s interesting to learn about most recently decades copying the Honda GX. I got my K181 running driving. Any idea how much I’d have to pay for it to be rebuilt if I did need it in future? Any idea on average time frame with parts available these days?
