Evening,

While researching and learning about Kohler engines, I came across this, unaware that Kohler still made small engines.
anyone have experience with this one or similar modern Kohler engines? How do they compare say to those harbor freight predators and or The genuine Honda 200s those are based off of?

Just stick with your  K181  The shaft on your linked engine is to small and too short.  I know you are trying to learn but stay focused on what you have.

Agreed. Plus the K181 has ball bearings at both ends of the crank. No comparison whatsoever.

That is the key component that will lead to learning.

Neither the newer Kohler or the Predator compare the the one you have, get it running and you'll be better off, "Just Do It".

What’s makes the original so much better? American made.. thicker block? Better components?

Cast Iron Block   real steel camshaft gears  ball bearings on the crankshaft

Edit:  Check back in 65 years see how many of the predators are still running:P
