953 nut 66,820 #3 Posted yesterday at 03:21 PM Kohler engines all have a drain plug near the base, drain the oil into a container until empty. Once empty reinstall the drain plug and use straight 30 motor oil. Your engine should use one quart. The drawing below shows how to check the oil level. 1

MShepheard 7 #5 Posted yesterday at 04:58 PM Hi all, sorry, didnt make it clear. Its a 72110 mower with a hydrostatic gearbox which I believe has a K61A Tuff Torq unit. Its the transaxle oil that I want to change . There is a top up resevoir under the bonnet . Somebody put ATF fluid in there to top it up !

ri702bill 12,291 #8 Posted yesterday at 06:58 PM Remember that the K series engines have neither an oil pump nor filter. Clean, uncontaminated oil is its lifeblood. If in doubt, change the oil.
MShepheard 7 #9 Posted 9 hours ago Ok, so I drained the old oil out, glad I did as it was a very odd colour. Now following the air bleeding process in the manual but I expected the reservoir to accept about 3 litres of oil before I had to start thinking about actually bleeding it but it only took about two cupfuls. There is oil in the resevoir but it isnt going into the gearbox. I did try the bleed process, idle engine and whilst jacked up alternate forward and reverse but it didnt take any more oil but as I know its running pretty much dry I stopped. Anybody any thoughts ?? Should I persevere with bleed instructions ??
MShepheard 7 #10 Posted 5 hours ago Ok, so problem sorted. I had the back wheels already off the ground in anticipation of the bleed process but I noticed when I lowered them that an air bubble rose up in the resevoir. Inspired by this I raised the front and this instantly drained the resevoir. It was then just a case of feeding in 3.5 litres or so of oil a resevoir at a time until it took no more and then the bleed process went through without a hitch. A new lease of life .... 1
