856: gas gauge exist?

Morning,

Wondering if a simple gas gauge exists for 856 stock tank.. I know 1/2 gallon capacity.. just open and look… just would be fun to see how Fast Fuel being used when towing mowing ect

Guess you could mark a stick with inches, half inches, quarter inches, eighth inches.                   Or you could use a ruler.

I've looked at this in the past for convenience issues.

 

I've never found one that meets all the criteria.

A. Fit under the stock hood.

B. Shows an accurate reliable reading.

 

 

Trina just opens the tank and if there's a whisker of a shine of moving fluid the whole world is right with her.

I can't see in the darkness that easily so I use a stick.

The gas cap on an 856 is very close to the hood. Noticed signs of rubbing on the inside of the hood on one.

Yup.  A stick.  That's what I've been using on my tractors and pontoon.  I bought a calibrated stick from Steiner when I ordered a bunch of parts for EJ, the 8n.

 

One of my earliest memories is watching my great uncle checking the gas level on his Chris Craft before he took us for a ride with a calibrated stick.  I was maybe 4, 5, or 6 at the time.

I vividly remember the VW sales guy pointing out to my Dad that the bug he was considering was the first year to have a gas gauge. Even as a pre-teen I thought “what the heck?"

wasn't the previous 'gas gage' a reserve valve?  You switched the valve to reserve when the engine stumbled as the gas in the main part of the tank ran out - provided you remembered to reset it to create a reserve the last time you filled the tank.

Yep. That was what had the sales guy so pleased. 

I thought the jump from 40 to 50 horsepower over the previous year--we lived in a pretty mountainous area--was more important.

Some thing like this would give plenty of clearance on the top of the tank. You would how ever have to cut a hole in the top of the tank. Says that the sensor has an adjustable length but I could not find exact dimensions.
