May 30, 1911 1st Indianapolis 500: Ray Harroun, driving a Marmon Wasp for Nordyke & Marmon Company, comes out of retirement and wins the inaugural event with an average speed of 74.6 mph.

... at The Brickyard. Look at all the oil burners! Back when it took TWO fearless folks to drive & navigate the track... Usually, the mechanic's job was to be constantly aware of the necessary lubrication, watch for tire wear and keep track of the parts that fell off. No Loctite back then!
