John99 0 #1 Posted 7 hours ago Hello, Long time Wheel Horse owner, but this is my first question on this forum so if it has been asked and answered previously, just point me to that thread. My Wheel Horse is a 1972 Raider Eight Model 1 0330 7 S/N 833449 I have owned it since 1980, my father bought it new in 1972. I have used for cutting grass for 46 years. Rebuilt the mower deck several times, rebuilt the Kohler K181S four years ago. The left rear axel seal has had a leak for maybe the past 5 years, not enough to drip on the ground but enough to make an oily condition on the inside of the steel wheel. Recently there is also an oil leak at the left side hub that serves as the brake. Again not enough to drip on the ground but the oily hub makes the brake very grabby. Questions: 1) I have good mechanical abilities and access to bearing - hub pullers, so how difficult of a job is this? 2) Any parts likely to break or deform in disassembly? 3) Assume I can do this repair with the transaxel in the tractor, correct? 4) Is there a video or a step by step write up on this repair? 5) Where would I find replacement seals and other parts needed and the part numbers? 6) The right side axel is not leaking, so should I leave it alone or go after it also. 7) and lastly, I am looking for info on the replacement of the Left Side Axel seal and the Left Side Brake Hub seal. thanks John99
Achto 31,824 #2 Posted 6 hours ago (edited) First question is - Why is it leaking ? I recently took a hydro tranny apart to find that a bad bearing was the cause of the seal failing. 1 hour ago, John99 said: 3) Assume I can do this repair with the transaxel in the tractor, correct? If it is just a bad seal, then "yes" this can be changed without removing the tranny. If you have bad bearings, then you will need to remove the tranny & split the case to repair the issue. A good source for complete bearing & seal kits to separate tranny parts. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product-category/manual-transmissions/ More options - Check your manual or down load a free manual from the forum. This will give you the part numbers for your tractor, then you can use the info below to order parts locally. Edited 6 hours ago by Achto 1
