My_horse 113 #1 Posted 7 hours ago Had the 314-8 out and put the mower on to mow the rough areas of the yard. Decided to change the trans oil while it’s good and warm. Probably better than 15 years since it was done last. This is what came out: shift boot is good, tractor is stored in a shed. Should I flush it with diesel or just refill with new oil? thanks

My_horse 113 #4 Posted 6 hours ago Just filled it with diesel and ran it around in all gears for 5 minutes. drained it out. going to let it sit for an hour with the front jacked up. Gotta see what I’ve got for oil. Should I fill with oil and be done with it, or run it a while, drain it and fill again? thanks again.
ebinmaine 78,583 #5 Posted 6 hours ago You could go either way on that one. If it was me I probably would do another diesel flush.
ri702bill 12,033 #6 Posted 4 hours ago I do not see the tractor raised so that the wheels can spin freely. Just dropping the fluid and refilling is inadequate to alleviate an issue with moisture in the Unidrive. That leaves too much comtaminated fluid clinging to the innards. A diesel flush is best - but - the Unidrive must be cycled thru all the gears - and hi & low ranges to get the sufficient "waterfall wash". Either by driving it or jacking it up in place. If you want to be amazed with the "waterfall" effect, pull the shifter out while doing the flush & look in.....The differential & gears spinning make for quite the splash.

The pinions and other differential internals only get worked when the rear wheels turn at different speeds--do some circles on your “drive around”!
ri702bill 12,033 #8 Posted 3 hours ago And DO look in the botton of the pan as you empty it for any "Gee, I don't think these should be here" bits - broken gear teeth, metal particles, or stray loose bearing needles.... Finding those is a game changer.....
peter lena 9,867 #9 Posted 2 hours ago @My_horse regularly check my trans oils , always in an oil looking state , clean / clear , no issues , something i use for a trans flush is hi mileage , atf fluid , and put some miles on it , have a number of cul de sacs , housing areas near me , use every gear , hi / low range , also like climbing gear oil , read specs , grease the underside of shift boot ? so it easily slides over the irregularities on top of trans , like a tye wrap just above the shift boot on the metal stick . do a regular trans check after every usage , no surprises , drop mine , 3 / 4 years , think you left a lot of debris in the trans , crannies . also a great time to red aerosol grease every related linkage movement point , penetrating oil make the rust run out . pete
My_horse 113 #10 Posted 1 hour ago The diesel rinse should have worked. Didn’t find any stray metal in the pan, so that’s good. I ran it around in all gears and did lots of turns. I’ll probably change it again before winter, just to be safe, and keep a better eye on the condition. Plus, change it on a more regular basis. Like maybe every 2 oil changes. filling the oil was sort of a pain. I put as much in as I could through the fill plug, until it started running out. Then put the rest in through the dipstick tube. That takes some time.
ri702bill 12,033 #11 Posted 1 hour ago Depending on the model - I find it easier to remove the shifter & fill thru that hole. The 854 is a snap that way, the C81 is not... 1
