oldredrider 2,548 #1 Posted October 5, 2009 I read/heard somewhere that dryer sheets (fabric softener) will help prevent mice from nesting in the engine shroud (and other places) while tractors are in winter storage. Can anyone attest to this or is it just a ploy to enhance the sale of dryer sheets? D-con works well to kill them, but they seem to build their nests before they die! whfan74 2,015 #2 Posted October 5, 2009 I have heard of the dryer sheets as well.......I don't think that it is a hoax.
Kelly 1,028 #3 Posted October 5, 2009 I've heard it works, but also my buddy did it to his camper, and the mice made a nest out of the dryer sheets. I've been told some brands are better than others, but not sure what ones work?? also was told plain sented.
Old Dave 0 #4 Posted October 5, 2009 We do this with our boat stored in the boat house every winter and have never had a problem. Put about 15-20 moth balls in a zip lock bag and leave the bag open and just place them around. The smell isn't pleasant but it works for us. :scratchead:
WH nut 553 #5 Posted October 6, 2009 I use Bounce dry sheets in the camper and have never had mice
perry 82 #6 Posted October 6, 2009 i herd that dryer sheets work as well. but they have to be bounce original sent. i tryed a knock off brand in my shed and a few tractors but it did not work. im going to try the original bounce . moth balls dont seem to work here. it seems to be a losing battle around here for mice. and they love to get into my old single cylinder briggs motors with the mag/coil under the shroud. and ofcource the majority of my tractors have them motors. my dog hunts for mice daily around the yard and in the sheds and lets me know when she finds one. i have them cute little brown mice with big ears that look up at ya right before the spade shovel ends their life. my dog will catch and kill'em also. but being a large dopey st.bernard she is slow at times and some get away. she will check the tractor out before i start it and check every tractor i bring home in the trailer. we nicked named her inspector wet and filthy dirty after a big mouse hunt. here is a list of some uses for bounce sheets . "Bounce" This Along 1. My mail carrier told me that the US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow-jackets away. 2. Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer. I use it when I am working outside. It really works. The yellow jackets just veer around you. 3. All this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer! It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice. 4. Spread sheets around foundation areas, or in trailers, or cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle. 5. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often. 6. It repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season. 7. Eliminate static electricity from your television (or computer) screen. 8. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling. 9. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce. 10. To freshen the air in your home - Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet. 11. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner. 12. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew. 13. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing. 14. To freshen the air in your car - Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat. 15. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food and the pan. 16. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bo ttom of the wastebasket. 17. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. 18. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling. 19. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. 20. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper. 21. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight. 22. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away. 23. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. It will keep them smelling fresh.
Duff 206 #7 Posted October 6, 2009 Perry, that's quite a pooch you've got there! As to the Bounce claims, there is some merit to some of them. I used to play in a band and we did a number of outdoor gigs on summer evenings. We would tuck Bounce sheets (original scent) into our shirt pockets and it kept mosquitos away very effectively. I use them on my tractor engines, so far with good results! As to deodorizing shoes or sneakers, here's another trick that works: Put them in a plastic bag (only for sanitary reasons) and leave them overnight in your freezer. The little germies that create foot odor can't survive freezing. During the summer I do this about once a week with my sneakers and work shoes and it works like a charm. Fortunately, I've got an understanding wife! I'll have to try some of the other uses. Duff :hide:

CasualObserver 3,406 #12 Posted October 6, 2009 Back when I was single and living in an apartment and before that in my barracks room, I used to tape a Bounce sheet across the cold air return on the furnace/air conditioner. Kept the whole place smelling clean.

jpmcleod 4 #14 Posted October 7, 2009 Considering the fact that my barn is not attached to the house. I have ten tractors and was faced with the same problem, although my were nice mice, they were grove rats. I would have chewed wires, nests, and droppings everywhere. I started letting one or more tractor run inside the barn with the door closed for about 15 minutes once a month and I haven't seen a live rat or any signs of rat nests or droppings since. Takes care of those pesky lizzards that crap on your tractor hoods too.
